Thought I was being healthy by having a pint glass of water with my dinner this evening.

Sadly, after finishing dinner and getting up to pick up the baby I knocked my week-old iPhone 5 straight in my half-empty glass of water, upside down.

Quick as a flash removed it, but the damage is done. After doing some research my 'water damage indicator' inside the sim card slot has already gone red - meaning it has been triggered. Well, I say gone red, it has a red spot in the middle, but it's supposed to be white.

I've removed the sim card tray and left it in front of the electric fire in the hope it would dry out. I then committed the worst offence of trying to switch it on. Apple logo appeared, then the screen flickered, then I panicked and the only way I could force it to turn off was by holding the off button and the home button symultaneously.

Now, I've managed not to curse the whole time and I'm quite proud of myself. What I'm wondering is whether anyone has used Natwest's Advantage Gold account mobile phone insurance?

Apparently you don't need to pre-register for it, it's automatic. I can't phone them right now but will do in the morning, but if anyone has any experiences I'd be keen to hear them.

Finally, if the phone can't be revived from its' current rice-filled bodybag in the airing cupboard (as advised by the internet) then I'll surely have to return it to get a replacement (if my insurance works out). If it doesn't come back to life, how do I rid it of my personal information? Files, photo's, logins to various sites?

Any help much appreciated. Tomorrow I'm having a beer with my dinner, on the basis that if I'd had one this evening then there's no way an iPhone would have fit down a bottle neck.

If you switched on the find my iPhone option you should be able to remote wipe it.

I have, with varying degrees of success. Being run by a 3rd party provider, they are VERY picky. I have a Black Account*, not sure if the Ts & Cs are different, but I was sufficiently disenchanted with some of their services to talk to my relationship manager about it.

Regarding the non-need to register, that is very recent and I think there were dates/deadlines when this kicked in so check carefully. I had my phone registered, which they eventually paid for (I left it on the car and drove off, they refused to pay saying I had "not taken appropriate care" of the phone, to which I responded "you state that you cover loss of the phone, how can loss be anything OTHER than "not taking appropriate care"). This was my first claim in almost 20 years of mobile ownership. Within 6 months the replacement phone was stolen, and they wouldn't pay because I hadn't registered the new IMEI; my mistake, for sure, but I simply hadn't remembered to do it when the first phone was lost.

Sister in law dropped her iphone in the toilet the other day. Put it in a plastic container with rice, put the lid on and left it in for 24 hours. Worked fine after that.

Phone did not come back to life, it's game over frown

It's a contract phone from T-Mobile, who suggest taking it in to them to have a look at. I'm thinking they will want to charge a ridiculous amount (as I don't have fonesafe insurance).

The Natwest thing as pointed out earlier in this thread changes policy on the 17th February. Before that the phone must be registered and they need the imei number, which can only be obtained when the phone actually works. Since my week-old phone isn't registered I'm stumped.

Getting a PAYG sim through the post that I can use in an old handset for now.

Bugger.

Won't Apple replace it for c.£120 anyway? Not cheap but depending on what the excess is it might be a lot less faffing about.

IMEI is on the sim card tray.

Yup, take into an Apple Store. You can sometimes pull off a free replacement, otherwise it's £129 (I think) for an instant replacement.

If its only a week old do you still have the Box? The IMEI number is on the back.

Yup £129
Its gone up for the iPhone 5, £180 now http://www.apple.com/uk/support/iphone/service/exc... Probably the best option anyway if insurance doesn't work out! Wouldn't bother sending it to T-Mobile, that sounds like a waste of time.

Just thought I would update this.

Started my claim for a replacement iPhone the other day, so thought I would box everything up ready to return it.

I couldn't resist the temptation to plug the phone in and see what happens (expecting fireworks).

Fired up and worked normally didn't it.

Seems absolutely fine now, been using it for 48 hours ish, made calls, took photographs, no problem.

Stupid phone.

This reminds me of a colleague of mine who thinks all Apple products are rubbish. His most recent argument was that his phone (some sort of Motorola) was waterproof whereas the Iphone isn't therefore making them rubbish. I immediately asked him to prove it and having bragged about it so loudly, my cajoling left him with little choice so he promptly dropped it in his full glass of water at which point.......it stopped working.

To say I fell of my chair with laughter was is an understatement. rofl

I think I'll show him this thread, just to rub it in. smile

The OH has a habit of dropping phones into water, soup, snow and other sources of bad moisture, so rather than get her phone insurance, I decided to get her a phone designed to cope. I can confirm after testing it works pretty well....

Was streaming music via Bluetooth at the time, quite impressive I thought.

That's the one, I was trying to remember the name. This was the phone my colleague had where he demonstrated it's waterproof features, err let's just say I wouldn't be so quick to dunk it into pints!

I got the OH an Xperia Go instead of the Motorola, she has had a couple of Xperias now and didn't fancy changing. I have to point out it was her who dunked it in the water, reasoning being that if it broke, we could send it back and say the waterproofing doesn't work. I mean if its advertised as being waterproof, they surely must expect people to try this - no different to if its advertised as having a great camera, people are going to take pictures with it....

I'm just waiting for my Xperia Z now so I can try the "eating baked beans off it" trick that's just surfaced in a promo video.
