I have a shed load of Avios and instead of going on our ususal 12 day driving holiday this summer MrsO and I have decided to do a 4 night away in a European city.

As we will be going late July we don't want anywhere too hot (Spain, Italy etc) plus we will have had a week away in Turkey earlier in the month (to celebrate the end of the nipper's GCSE's).

Favourite is Berlin as neither of us have been and we will both enjoy the history...but we are open to suggestions smile

I am looking to Avios to sort the hotel at Heathrow; business class flights; transfers if possible; and a 5* hotel.

So the questions are

- Berlin or anywhere better? Nothing long haul on this trip ta smile
- Hotel suggestions in Berlin? MUST be central. The list that Avios have all look great...
- Places to visit? I will be doing my research before we go but any guidance appreciated
- Eating/drinking venues?

We will have to rely on trams/taxis etc as MrsO has some mobility issues.

Any recommendations based on your personal experiences will be much appreciated.

ta smile

Berlin is a great city - I'm sure you'll have a great time. I'd recommend signing up for Drive-Now, which is by far the best car club/car sharing scheme I;ve ever used. They have a load of new shape 1 Series, Mini Coopers, Mini Cabrios etc.

You don't actually need one. Walk up to a car, swipe in and go, then drop off anywhere in the city.
fking brilliant system. If it came to London I could save thousands a year!

I would recommend Das Gift - a bar run by part of Mogwai. http://dasgift.tumblr.com/
Make sure to check out http://www.tempelhofer-park.de/

The rest really depends what you are into. Berghain/Panorama Bar is famous for a reason. It is incredible, but not for everyone.

Berlin is cracking smile
Been a few times with work, lots to see and do, I'd recommend the old hop on and off bus tour, thought it was great!

Lots of sights, great architecture, good food and drink, and plenty of history!

Can't help you with where to stay, as I always crash in the lorry!

Berlin booked!!

Used Avios:

Night in the Sofitel at Heathrow; Business Class flights; 4 nights Grand Hyatt in Berlin (5*); transfers at Berlin airport. Grand total 200k Avios and £87 for taxes...oh and £60 parking at Heathrow.
RESULT!

So anymore suggestions for places to go/things to see.

I guess we will take a citytour and I think there are boat trips. The Reichstag; Brandenburg Gate; Checkpoint Charlie are all on the list.

Any more suggestions greatly appreciated smile

I was in Berlin last month and would definitely recommend this walking tour:

http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Attraction_Review-g18...

They split into smaller groups if it's busy so go with the 6'8 Barnaby if you get chance!

brandenburg gate. lots to see and do there.
the holocaust memorial, is unusual but i think well worth a visit.
down by the o2 arena, you'll find the "wall." think its known as the east side gallery, its over a kilometre long, and its like sections of the wall turned into art, well worth a look.
if memory serves me right, as you walk along it, you may well come across a bar by the river, thats done out like a beach, quite cool as it will be summer, may be worth popping in for a shandy smile
some of the lads i tour with did a boat trip, and said it was very good.
also check out, kaiser-wilhelm memorial church.
it got bombed during the war, and has been left as a lasting reminder, well worth a visit, as is the new bell tower next door. this is also near the europa centre, and main shopping area if your into that sort of thing?
i also think the olympic stadium/park is worth a mention. all being well i'll be there beginning of september smile

Wow...loads here - cheers thumbup
I'll check them all out...thanks

Inonthis: Than ks for the suggestion but the trouble with walking tours is that MrsO can't last the distance due to her MS so we tend to dip out on those. I tend to plan short visits to places and ensure that there are places to stop and sit/have a coffee etc so that she doesnt get too knackered. We are only able to do mornings as well as by the pm she's finished!

Keep 'em coming...

Has anyone been to Sachsenhausen? If so I could do with details of an organised cpoach trip if possible rather than public transport.

i'm sure you'll be able to sort a coach trip when you get to berlin without to much bother.
be interested to hear back if you do go, as i'd be interested in going next time i get to berlin.

Topography of Terror in the site of the Gestapo HQ on Niederkircherstrasse is worth a visit.

If you are a petrolhead go to the Meilenwerke where the exotic car dealers and owners hold their cars. Free admission - check out route in advance s a bit tricky to find. Simply amazing cars...hundreds of them.

If you want something really quirky go to the amazing Russian War memorial near Potsdam as I recall.

Take a trabi tour in a Trabant.

At checkpoint Charlie street vendors sell some interesting stuff. I bought a set of Russian dolls (7 in the set) with Soviet/Russian leaders, starting with a large Yeltzin and working down to a tiny Tsar Nicholas. Great value.

You can get the S Bahn to Oranienburg and its a 15 min walk to Sachsenhausen from there about.
(Worth getting a daily travel passes anyway - allow you to use buses, underground, overground, trams etc)

Could check out Potsdam too which is really nice for a few hours.

There's Checkpoint Charlie which is worth a look (wouldn't bother with the museum).

The TV tower has a revolving restaurant and you get great views.

And then the clubbing. Head to Freidrichshain/Kreutzberg and enjoy all the underground Berlin techno/house biggrin

Thanks for this. We'll pass on the techno/house, us being a lot closer to 50 than 20 hehe

After research the list of possibles is:

- Resistance against National Socialism Museum
- Topography of Terror Museum
- Russion War Memorial
- Trabant Safari (oh yes yeshehe)
- Boat Trip (many to choose from)
- TV Tower
- Brandenburg Gate
- Checkpoint Charlie/Wall Museum
- Berlin Cathedral
- DDR Museum
- Reichstag Building (dome)
- Holocaust Museum
- Potsdamer Platz (our hotel is here anyway)

Out of town trips:-

- Sachsenhausen or Ravensbruck
- Potsdam

We won't get to all of these places as we dont want a 'route march' but they present options for us depending on how we feel/health/weather etc

Here is one tip. As I recall there is a bookable English language tour of the Reichstag on Tuesdays. Check their website. Much faster and avoids the lineups. If you just want to do the dome book the restaurant on the roof. Its been a while since I did this, but lineups can be substantial.

They have a good website. Its where exotic car dealers and private individuals store their cars. No admission charge and nobody there when I visited. Car are not roped off ,surprisingly, but I was very careful not to touch anything or let a hanging camera scrape anything. Its in Berlin proper.
