I'm after a bit of help really from anyone with some knowledge of these cars and this fault.

Sadly, we own one of these cheese mobiles and after only 2 months ownership, it's thrown up possibly the most expensive fault of all... The electronic parking brake has failed.

Totally out of the blue, working perfectly yesterday but my misses pulled off the drive (it disengaged fine) and the error appeared on the dash and the handbrake will no longer engage. There is no noise from the motor, it just appears dead.

I've googled and none of the results suggest anything diy that I can really do or even look at... Just stories of £750 repair bills from renault and faults that never go away...

I've tried one suggestion that was to reset the system but it does nothing. I've also checked every fuse I can find although I don't know if I've missed any as renault seem to have taken it upon themselves to make them as inaccessible as possible. They even say so in the manual and suggest you visit a dealer rather than checking the fuses yourself... Bloody cheese monkeys...

So, is there actually anything I can do about this myself or am I really looking at a £750 repair bill? I hope fking not... It's the most depressing, uncomfortable, hateful pile of st I've ever driven... but the misses loves it, hence why we own it... I really do not want to throw that sort of money at fixing a fking hand brake!

Any help appreciated!

It's an electronic system, so there are only a couple of things to look at. First off, get the fault code read to see whether that offers up any advice.

According to jsut about everything on google, there is never a fault code when they fail. Just the dash going haywire and the handbrake not working...

Forget the DIY guessers on Google, get it checked by someone with the right kit and knowledge, even if there aren't any fault codes there's a good number of other tests that can be done.

There are common faults on the parking brake switch which isn't too expensive and also (depending on year etc) there's a multiplug under the passenger seat storage compartment which gets water in it and corrodes up. Not all the possible faults will cost big bucks.

What year or mk?

Some have two seperate motors others have one that drives both mechanisms. Like a normal handbrake.

If its the seperate side type is one side working? Does the over ride work? (pull the engage switch for 10+ seconds) see what happens. Does the mechanical over ride word if its the singular type,

Need to decifer if its the unit/s or the control. Most likely to be the motor/s a clean might fix it, really need to get under it to have a look

Have alook at the link, seems to be a frequent occurance, linked with dashboard problems?.
As an aside if you have only had it a couple of months get the garage you bought it from to fix it free of charge! it is obviously not roadworthy, it would fail an MOT.

Isnt this the emergency or parking hand brake?
Something you use if the hydraulics to the footbrake fail
What was wrong with a bit of wire running from a lever to the brakes?
