All,

I've been looking through this forum and there is lots of good advice and a very welcoming atmosphere.

Anyway, I am curious, how much water do you drink? I only ask as when I am training I seem to drink large amounts and was curious as to how much others do. I am not talking about during a workout, but just generally.

I drink somewhere between 10-12 litres a day, sometimes more.

This isn't a new thing, I've been doing this for 8 years now.

Water on its own, rarely, but buckets of tea.

rofl A new meaning for the phrase "piss artist".

Seriously, that waaay too much. With a normal diet probably just one litre of water/fruit juice/milk/tea/coffee or even beer/lager/wine is enough, though some choices are obviously healthier than others. You need a bit more if you exercise, but not eleven litres more! You must spend half your life in the bogs.

'A little knowledge' and all that.

Wow. Are you sure you're really drinking that much???

Unless you live in the desert and do mega workouts in the noon sun that's way more than your body needs. Drinking too much water can also be dangerous - more about drinking large quantities over too short a period.

On a normal day I'll drink a glass of orange juice,4-5 cups of tea, a litre of water and a mug of hot chocolate.

10 -12 litres of water seems like a huge amount

Somewhere between one and two litres of water per day, excluding tea or coffee. Sometimes more, it just depends on how I'm feeling.

No water on its own unless in the gym. I have quite a few cups of "alternative" teas throughout the day plus a cup or two of coffee. I say alternative - if science proved that they were effective, then they'd just be called tea, I guess.

That is a huge amount of water! I think recommended is something like 2 litres.

I drink mainly water throughout the day, probably 2-3 litres I'd imagine.

Are you type 1 diabetic and just don't know it? I struggle getting to 2 litres a day and that's after filling up my water bottle each morning so I know how far I have to go that day.

I'm genuinely not trying to be condescending here, but are you aware of just how much 12 litres is?

Think of the big bottles of coke

and times it by 6. That's how much water you are drinking per day... how?!

You must be peeing constantly.

I imagine that I must get through 2 500ml bottles at the gym, 3-4 coffees and maybe 3 330ml cans of diet pop in an average day. So 3 ltrs a day maybe but then theres the water in food so maybe 3.5 ltrs. I always feel hydrated and my piss is usually clear.

3-4 pints of dimmed milk and about 3-4 pints of tap water.

There is absolutely no way that you are drinking 12 litres of water a day.

I felt I wasn't getting enough water intake from my daily cups of tea/coffe and fruit juice in the morning.
Made a New Year resolution to up my 'pure' water consumption by drinking a pint of water in the morning before leaving for work and one in the evening when getting home.
I reckon thats just over a litre extra per day and I feel better for it, but 12 litres!!!!! No way, I'd pop!

In fact, it could be enough to kill you.

That was the basis of my statement.

I monitor my intake carefully and there are days that it can be as high as 12 litres. Most days it will hover around 10.

I ask as I have read many times that this is far too much to drink and I have spoken with doctors about this too but no one seems to have an answer.

A typical intake would be:

1.5 litres when I wake up before breakfast (circa 0700)
3 litres after breakfast/before lunch (0730 - 1230)
3 litres after lunch/before gym (1300-1600)
1.5 litres during work out
3 litres after workout before bed.

So that totals: 12 litres a day without too much trouble. I drink using 1.5 litre bottles so that I can keep track of my intake.

I have been under an investigation for glucose intolerance and apparently I wasn't intolerant but during the test where I could not drink/eat anything for two hours, I became very dehydrated.

I am well aware of what 12 litres looks like smile I usually drink tap water where possible as it is much cheaper than bottled water. But when we have to buy bottled water we buy it by the crate.

What is strange is the infrequency that I visit the restroom, not a huge amount more than anyone else I would say.

I'm a big water drinker as well but only circa 7 or 8 litres over a day plus maybe another couple of litres of herbal teas coffee, wine etc.

I buy water by the pallet and drink it slowly and steadily through the day peaking during my daily workout, I'm convinced that flushing through my system does me the power of good yum

You may well be convinced. You aren't correct.
