Hi All

As my gearbox is looking/sounding a bit suspect. I am thinking about picking up a spare to get reconditioned at some stage in the future (hopefully not to soon).

My question is and sorry if it's another daft one. What do I need to look out for? As a lot of the ones I see are advertised as Landrover Defender etc boxes. I would assume that the gearing for these would be different from our boxes? As the RV8 engine was so popular it was stuffed into loads of different vehicles even some LDV vans I read somewhere.

How do you know which one to get when it might be just a gearbox listed?

Cheers Karl

You need an LT77 'rear wheel drive' gearbox, the RangeRover/Disco 4WD boxes are LT77s but have a different casing. The 'RWD' gearboxes were on SD1 Rovers, TR7 (TR8 and 5 speed 2.0 Litre too), Morgan, TVR and sherpa van V8s and maybe others?

They're on ebay regularly, I picked one up quite cheap and fitted it to my car (with new oil)in the hope that it'd be a good one, and so far (fingers crossed) it's OK. Much cheaper than a rebuild, unless you're paying someone to swap it in/out for you.

I would also put difflock oil in it. http://shop.difflock.com/difflock-evolution-fully-...

Noticeable difference in my opinion.

Plus me too with that opinion !! Brilliant stuff.

The LT 77 was last used in 1994 and has a Suffix H - this is a bullet proof box capable of running 300 Hp and 280 Ft Lbs. It has widened gears, larger diameter layshaft and has a dual syncro on 1st & 2nd. The oil pump was also increased in width. The H was also known as the LT77S.

Go search for the lettering of at least G but preferably H on the box.

Thanks Guys

Very usefull info.

Will this oil prolong the life of my already noisy GB?

And Trev where is the number on the box please? I can see one on the underside of the bell housing but that's it.

Cheers Karl

Hi Karl,

The Oil should quieten it down a little - if it's worn.........its, well, worn? The oil isn't cheap either - or to be precise, it is quality fully synthetic oil, it's just that they charge an arm and leg in postage 8-((

These guys have quite a bit of info (never used them), but serial number is next to big filler plug, drivers side - this linky has a video to show you: http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/index.php?...

The format will look like (not necessisarily starting with 28A!): 28AxxxxxxxX - the x's are numbers & the last X is the Letter denoting version, D to H (you want an H or G!)

If you search Google etc with LT 77, there is quite a bit of information out there??

Good luck.

I agree the later gearboxes are better but they're more difficult to find. When were they introduced and what were they used on? My '86 350i had a 'D' suffix box so I'm guessing all the SD1s had D or earlier suffixes as I think the SD1 ended production in '86? So after '86 you'd be looking for an ex TVR/Morgan etc box?

I think my '87 has an 'E' suffix.
