I did do a search for related threads but couldn't find anything, so my apologies if this is a repeat.

In short, I've never had any issues with gear selection (other than when my clutch slave failed), but taking my car out for the first time in 2 months today I initally found it had to select 5th gear. Then, when I did get it into 5th it would periodically 'pop' out. This seemed to happen while coasting, and not when the power/throttle is applied. No other gear was affected.

Let me make it clear from here, I'm quite mechanically savy, and do as much of the work on my car myself as possible. I've never taken a gearbox apart so please bear that in mind. Having had a bit of a scout around the net I found some stories of of 'snap rings' coming off and allowing 5th gear to 'walk back' on it's ashaft.

Is the problem that I've described a common/known fault, or could it be that having not used the car for a while things just need a bit of use to loosen up again?

I'm due to go to Spa at Easter so looking to get it sorted before then. Given the time available, the current weather and the facilities I've got to hand I think I'll send it to the local indie. But I want to be able to figure it out so I can get it sorted with the minimum fuss.

Thanks in advance,
Olly

In fifth the gear stick is quite close to a chassis rail. Have a check on the engine / gearbox mounts as it could just be a case of the front to back movement of the drive train knocking it out of gear......just a thought

OK, I hear what you're saying. But why would it change all of a sudden?

maybe a mount has suddenly failed. Did it a couple of times on my race car.
