I know this is the number/code from your P60 (B20/somethingorother for example), but how do you find it out if you are self employed? I'm filling in an invoice for somebody and it has been requested. I've scoured all my correspondance with HMRC and my tax returns for the last year or two and can find no mention...

Even if I could find the code - how can I work out the district itself?

All the districts are now centralised into several offices around the UK - your office will be as shown on your recently issued self-assessment statement or tax calculation - you should have received both of these prior to 31 January 2013 if you are up to date with your submissions.

Have you had any of the following items of correspondence -

A Notice to Complete a Self Assessment Tax Return?
A reminder of the above?
An HMRC Statement of Account?

All of these will show -

Your self assessment tax reference (technically called the Unique Tax Reference or UTR). This is a ten digit number and is always shown on the above documents. The tax district reference is also shown on these types of documents although this is of less relevance these days as all tax returns are now processed centrally and most tax returns are submitted electronically.

How did you complete and submit your tax return?

If you did it electronically, you would have had to use some computer software or even HMRC's own submission screens. When submitting the return electronically, you would have had to use the tax reference when entering the system - so you must have had some record of it somewhere.

If you completed it on paper, the UTR would have been pre-printed on the blank paper return sent to you for completion by HMRC.

Self Assessment tax payslips also show the UTR.

Thanks guys.

I have the UTR, I file my tax electronically using the HMRC website. I can't find any reference to my tax district on any correspondence (SA statements, tax calcs, etc.). On my last notice to complete there was an "employee reference number" that was a few numbers/letters separated by "/"s, and an "issued by" address which was just Self Assessment in Newcastle.

I'm not sure why I am being asked for it to be honest, has to be the first time I have.

What were the three numbers prior to the /?

The Newcastle address is now your district - as I said all the individual districts work has been centralised into several Mega-offices.

Your tax district will be Newcastle then if they have written to you. Your tax district number is 3 digits long and will be before the / - i.e. 123/

Eric, those numbers are "120" - so in effect I need "Newcastle" and "120"?

I really fail to understand why they need all this plus my UTR - surely just a signed declaration that I will declare the earnings myself would be enough for them?

Thanks all!

That's why I asked for those three numbers.

My software actually tells me that the proper name for Tax District 120 is "Northeast Metropolitan"

Eric

The old PAYE district names such as that are no longer used by HMRC - only the centralised offices. This was publicised by HMRC a while back and ICAEW also distributed an update to all the current mailing addresses at the time if I recall.

I do know that.

But the numbers and references still exist and they are still linked to physical offices and distinct districts.

The processing has been centralised. But the districts are still there. If some one is asked by a third party for "their tax office" I would still give the office as the one linked to the three digit code shown on their tax reference.
