BJB BKC BLS BXE 1.9 TDi engines reliable?
Discussion
I am currently looking at getting a Seat Altea 1.9 TDi and have noticed that four different 1.9 TDi engines have been fitted depending on the year. I read a post on here recently stating that some engine codes are less reliable than others (BLS springs to mind) so I wanted to know if there are any engine codes to avoid on this car?
I would probably be looking at a 2004/5 car so it would most likely have either the BJB or BKC engine fitted. Would this engine have a DPF fitted or would it be Euro III compliant?
Many thanks!

I'd avoid buying any VAG product after my experiences TBH. Known design fault, lots of failures, deny everything and move on. Not an attitude to engender brand loyalty!

My fabia vRS (asz engine code) has 145k on the clock. The engine is as sweet as a nut and I've had no issues whatsoever with the engine. My mate has a B6 A4 with the same 1.9tdi engine. He's done 230k in his with only routine serving.
Get yourself vagcom, oil change every 7k and, sit back and relax!

I've worked on Audi's now for 8 years, and we have never seen a 1.9TDI engine failure. I dont know anyone that has.
Engine never just throw rods, there is always more to it. Only Diesel engines I have every seem throw rods had a back story.
e.g
(1)
We had and engine throw a rod recently (2.0tdi CR) fault memory loged a code at 7000+rpm, customer must have missed a gear (2nd instead of 4th most likely).
(2)
DPF issue causing ECU to repeat regen every drive, this caused large amount of fuel in the oil until oil was to thin to lubricate the engine pickup on cylinders and knocking bearings, guy kept driving til it exploded.
(3)
DPF issue causing, again fuel in oil, oil level ended up so high engine revved its self to bits on its own oil (its a diesel thing) google deisel runaway.
SO in short as long as there is no DPF you will be fine with 1.9. If you want a newer car with DPF, make sure its CR not PD.

Sorry Tame technician but I strongly disagree. Had the car from 12k miles, never missed a gear (no codes logged when skoda checked), serviced on time and oil checked regularly. Threw a conrod at 2.5 yrs/63k.Have a look at the link to earlier posts- there is a KNOWN fault with these engine codes at this time of manufacturer but obviously not every one of them goes. I personally know of FIVE bxe engined vw and skodas belonging to friends and colleagues that hsve had the same problem, all of whom got brushed off by VAG but won't be buying them again.
I've been working on VAG's for around 5 years and the only catastrophic failures I've come across have been down to either lack of maintainence and an ancillary part has caused the damage, or failure of cam belts due to either poor maintainence again, or if the fuel filter housing leaks onto poly vee belt and wraps itself around the crank pulley (there was a workshop action for this).
I'm not suggesting your 1.9 was poorly maintained, but in your other post you mention the independent garage used an engine flush on every oil change. I have never agreed with this practice as it can indeed cause washing of the bores and the other oily internals causing the otherwise harmless carbon to be circulated around the engine and ultimately causing possible failiue.
Using the correct and good quality oils is essential in the pd engines and if they are, there's no reason they can't (and do) last for 200'000 +

There of the other four that I know of that went did not use an engine flush however. They were all either BXE or BLS, never heard of any of the other engine codes go on the other forums. If it was a freak accident I don't know 1/ why there have been at least 20 failures I've heard of and 2/ why only certain engine codes are affected.
I still have the Octavia, just praying that lightening doesn't strike twice (I've been told that the design in later BXE-coded 1.9s has been fixed). B***dy thing has just thrown a gearbox which I'm told was caused by damage when the engine let go (and when you goggle gearbox failure, particularly at 105k, it is almost unheard of in any modern car), cost nearly as much to fix as the car is worth....

boy had a 105 hp pdi golf mk5, she drove the wheels off it for 80K miles taking it upto160k and it never missed a beat or used any oil or water. It wasn't even serviced regularly while she had it, these things can take some punishment.
