I'm not sure; I used to think Muhammad Ali, or Nelson Mandela. It's probably some footballer or reality tv star now??

This. Must be at least the most recognisable person in the world.

this.

most of the world couldn't give monkeys about our monarchy.
most of the world doesn't listen to or care about our music.

but football... there is barely a country in the world football is not huge in. david beckham was the most famous player from the most famous team. I have seen his shirts in every country I have ever been to.

Michael Jackson.

Everywhere I've ever been, they all know him.

And that's a lot of out-of-the-way, dodgy, places

I would argue M'cCartney is FAR more famous the Beckham.

He could even now at seventy sell out huge stadiums in every corner in the world from Peru to Australia to Moscow, and remember he was world famous many years before Beckham was born.

He's still very recognisable in the UK. Mainly due to the fact that he gets wheeled out to ruin every sodding national event with yet another rendition of "na, na, na, na, na, na, naaaaaa".

However, I'd suggest that, outside of the UK, he would be recognised by relatively few people under the age of 40.

I reckon the top four would be:

- Michael Jackson
- Beckham
- Obama
- Bill Gates

I don't know who is the most famous, but given football is huge everywhere apart from the USA, I'd say Beckham or Messi must be in with a shout. Even people who know or care little for football know those two.

Whilst not the most famous, Susan Boyle must be the person who got the most famous in the shortest time, thanks to instant media/twitter/internet/you tube.

One Saturday evening she appears on our screens as a total unknown, and by the next week she was headline news across the whole world. I wonder what someone like Bruce Forsythe thinks of that, he's been plugging away for 65 yrs and if he could go to Calais and no one would have a clue who he was.
