It's looking ever more likely that Audi will join the F1 circus next season with a 4 pot turbo diesel, to take advantage of the new engine regulations.

Audi Sport boss Dr Helmut Langschwanz said "Audi has aleady shown the world how Vorsprung durch Technik can dominate Rallying, Touring Cars and Endurance Racing, so Formula 1 is a natural progression."

Dr Langweile believes that the weight saved by the lighter fuel load required by their diesel engines will more than compensate for any perceived power disadvantage. "Future F1 races will only be won by cars with the most fuel-efficient engines and by drivers who know how to manage the best fuel-economy from their cars. We will expect our drivers to achieve a minimum of 70mpg during any race weekend."

Dr Langnase would not be drawn on pitlane rumours that Audi drivers would be ordered to hold up faster drivers at any cost.

This isn't anywhere near as good as some of the old BMW April Fools adverts.

How on earth will VW get 700+ bhp from a 4 cylinder 2ltr tdi?

Its Enduro racers don't even produce that much from 5.5ltr v12's!!!

Indeed. Quite how Audi are going to enter F1 with a 4 cylinder diesel, when the regulations state it has to be a 6 cylinder petrol engine is anybody's guess.

They won't need to get 700+ bhp with the new rpm limit next year being reduced from 18,000 to 2,800.

The Audi F1 team are said to be recruiting minicab drivers to train the racing drivers in the fine art of driving everywhere below 1300rpm whilst listening to an obscure radio station through only the front-right speaker.

Apparently they're also developing a new lightweight carbon-fibre beaded seat cover.
