Tesla to post first-ever profits

Elon Musk says success of Model S saloon means electric car maker is now a 'real company'

Tesla Motors announced this weekend that it’s set to announce a quarterly profit for the first time in its 10-year history.

Model S has sold better than expected
Model S has sold better than expected
The California-based electric car manufacturer has revealed that sales of its new Model S saloon topped predictions, with final registration figures totalling 4,750 – 250 above Tesla’s target. It’s a milestone moment in the company’s history, and will undoubtedly be a relief for Tesla’s outspoken founder Elon Musk, who’s had to contend with a run of negative PR in past months. “There have been many car start-ups over the past several decades, but profitability is what makes a company real,” he said. “Tesla is here to stay and keep fighting for the electric car revolution.” The news contrasts the problems faced by embattled eco car maker Fisker, currently struggling with battery supply issues and feeling the heat after the resignation of its founder.

As part of the announcement, Tesla also confirmed that it will drop the slow-selling 40kWh version of the Model S, focussing instead on the faster and longer-range 60kWh and 85kWh versions.

Tesla’s announcement caused the company’s share price to jump by more than a fifth, with the result that the company is now valued at around £3.3 billion. It’s also promising news for recent start-up Detroit Electric, which hopes to follow the path Tesla’s trodden by commencing production of an electric Lotus-based roadster, before expanding into the manufacture of further models.

Its just a money making exercise, the environment stuff is pure bluster. How many millions of US tax dollars have been invested in this company??

They made a profit on a qtr, the company is MASSIVELY in debt

...and the first step towards repaying that debt is to be making a profit!

Jeez, can we give these guys a chance, there's obviously the demand there.

IF I would ever consider an electric car, this would definitely be on my list...

All the people who genuinely care about the environment kill their children and then themselves. Everything else is just lifestyle choices.

Still puzzled about where all the 'grenhouse gas' produced by the powerstations that generate the electricity for thse cars goes? I guess it's just a case of moving away from one area to another? Unless of course they are nuclear power stations but greenies don't like them. Anyway it's a nice looking car but there are plenty of nice looking cars, I just don't get the green aspect.

The green aspect comes from being able to efficiently generate elec centrally and allows for clean sources. That's the idea.

Also take into account localised emissions reductions from exhaust.

Lovely car. Best of luck to the company.

One step closer to cheaper tech for the rest of us.

I get that all the tech is worth stupid money, and any patents probably more so.....but can anyone tell me how this company is worth $3.3 billion? Or is that just cash they have left over from suing everyone who doesn't accept the latest of Mr Musks wk creations as jesus on wheels?

I can't see why people get all flustered about Electric cars.

If you don't want one, don't buy one biggrin

Remember 15 years ago (probably many of you don't actually), when the only diesels were tractors and taxis?

If you want to be driving your own car when the oil runs out (or you can no longer afford a litre from your monthly salary!) then electric is, currently (ho ho biggrin), the most viable option, so we should all follow the success (or otherwise) of Tesla, Fisker and the others, with interest.

I have no plans to buy an electric car, but it's interesting to see how things like the new Tesla are moving from 'early adopters with stupid amounts of money' to 'early adopters'. Will be interesting to see where we are in 5 or 10 years time.

Of course, in principle, you can generate electricity with minimal environmental impact, the fact we don't at the moment isn't the fault of the electric car makers.

There are a couple of issues here:
1.) No Petrol tankers were used to deliver the electricity to you local plug.
2.) Generation of electricity on mass and using it locally is more efficent than burning petrol/ desiel locally.

No one (who counts) claims these are 100% environmentally neutral, just that this is a better way to go and the begining of a new phase of motoring.

I wish them the best of luck. I think it's a great looking car and it deserves to do well.

I don't understand all the negative criticism, they are a company who aims to make a profit for their share holders, they make a product that is good looking and is interesting. I don't really care about the 'green' credentials as I think it's all a load of rubbish, however as a 'car', I think it's pretty cool.

I like that car, and I also like the small Lexus/Toyota hybrids. Less emissions can only be good............however:

As only 0.5% of harmful emissions are from road traffic (and most of that is commercial vehicles) can I politely remind Mr Cameron that the other 99.5% needs addressing (and taxing - eg Airline fuel - as air travel is about 3% of the harmful emissions) properly rather than mugging and blaming the motorist.

So when that New York Times journo published an article explaining exactly how far short of Tesla's claims the Model S falls, and Musk went absolutely apest trying to sue them for millions of dollars' damages, he was talking total bks when he claimed the article had cost them thousands of sales?

Imagine that.

I quite like what the company is doing, but that guy is a clown.
