Maybe it's my age, maybe I'm just bored with BMWs and Mercs and think Audi's a bit too bling but I've got a real hankering to replace my A to B 530i with a C6.



My commute for the last 15 years is almost exclusively motorway and dual carriage way and with the exception of a couple of roundabout - not a single bend to speak of. I've thrown £30K Mercs and BMWs up and down it and fancy a change. Not least because I seem to throw away money buying a Merc or BMW only to watch it depreciate as I stack up the miles each week.

The C6 looks perfect.

Different, wafty, frugal, comfy cabin, toys, seriously cheap second hand and oohh did I say wafty? Apart from there only being about 20 cars for sale in the whole of the UK what's wrong with them as a second hand car? New I can see stiff competition from BMW, Merc etc. but used? They seem like a bargain for the motorway commuter.

Are they notoriously unreliable? Expensive to maintain?

Or am I just being ridiculous and should just get a 730d if I want wafty and stick with what I know?

Great engine and by far the coolest modern car around.
A brave choice but if it doesnt work out then in 6 months chop it in for a 730d,at least you'll of tried it?

As you know same/similar engine to that used in the jaguar/land rover groups cars as the 2.7 tdv6 so check for common issues. Think that on the disco the turbo(s) are hard to get to but on this the engine will be fitted in the orientation as designed with access and a lot less stressed than lugging a discovery around boosting hard from cold.

Haven't heard much about the rest, worth reading up online and perhaps talking to a specialist via citroenian or something.

A good specialist with knowledge of these is always advisable, any hydraulic suspended Citroen will cost a bomb at a main dealers but 1/2 or less the labour at a specialist makes it reasonable.

I say go for it, just make sure that you pay the right price so that you don't lose too much if you decide that it's not for you.

Please buy it. It is probably way better than any german car for wafting around in. I bet it is SO comfy.

As said by a previous poster, one of a few sub-zero cool cars made within the last 10 years.

One of my rules is never depend on a car you don't know anything about.

Another one is never buy French, but that could start an argument that'll go on for ages...

Yes that is the bit I'm worried about the most. I still have the mental scars from a Renault 5 GTL that nearly bankrupt me at 18. The only other car that come close to doing that was a MG Metro, due to its failed hyrdolastic suspension, at 18 and a half... About the same time I exited the rear of a friends Renault 18 on a round about due to the door opening on it own.

So far to say I don't have a great history around French cars nor hydraulic suspension. biggrin

They're awful, awful cars. I had a 2009 one as a rental a few years back.

Navigation was fiddly, though not the worst I've experienced. Seriously massive things, very hard to park. Handling was not just wafty but actually sloppy and the ride comfort wasn't that great. Engine wasn't slow but not especially quick, nor refined - but it was thirsty, barely breaking 30 mpg (2.7 V6 diesel). The steering on mine had masses of play and vibration. The front parking sensors were very broken - any time I got within about five feet of a car in traffic it would beep madly.

The seats were pretty good though, and the styling was at least different.

If I said I'd rather have a Chevy Impala, you'd think I was mad, but even that is a better car in my opinion.

I've driven three and loved every one. Mind you, the cars I sampled were press cars.

I have had one Audi and two Citroen's. Enough said.

French beats German when out of warranty, but don't buy a Renault!

Reliability wise nothing in it, but the Citroen will be cheaper to live with and the C6 is a great car.

i have to admit french cars may not be up there with german quality, but 2nd hand they offer a lot. psa cars do ride/drive well if you choose well, in my own views ride so much better and good steering feel.

The best bit there are proper helpful owners clubs who will offer guides and how to's for when it goes wrong..smile

I like it, go for it
