What do you reckon to this????

I'll keep it as brief as possible so as not to bore you, but I am feeling pretty spooked out this morning....

Being a fan of the seventies band Barclay James Harvest, for the last three years I have contributed to the Yahoo discussion group, which comprises around 170 members.....

Now on this group there is a fan who lives in Brisbane, Australia, 12,000 miles away from me called Kevin.

A couple of years ago, on the list, Kevin happened to mention he was English, and moved out to Oz 13 years ago with his wife.....

I got talking to him on the net, and asked him where he was from in England.....

He said he grew up in Stalybridge, which is a small industrial town 10 miles east of Manchester....

I said, that's amazing, that's where I grew up, I could not believe it.....

Then the conversation went something like this.....

"How old are you?"

"49"

"Blimey, so am I"

"Who did you know in Stalybridge at the time?", I said

He mentioned the names of three people, who were all part of the group of my friends I used to knock around with 35 years ago......

Now bear in mind Stalybridge has a population of around 24,000....

I asked him where he lived in Stalybridge, and it turned out it was in the very next road 500 yards away...

I said what football team do you support and Kev said he was a lifelong Manchester City fan, the same as me......

Then we got on to the subject of children....

He said "I have two boys, Robert and James"..

I said "That's funny, two of my three boys are called Robert and James"......

And the amazing thing is we did not know each other when we lived so near, and had the same group of friends......

Now we come to the spooky bit.......

At the moment he is over in the UK, visiting his elderly mother, so we arranged to go out for a drink last night, so I said I would call round to his Mum's house and pick him up, as I knew where she lived...

So I pulled up and parked outside in my 6 month old Hyundai Coupe, which is a metallic Silver colour....

I knocked on the door, said hello, and he said where have you parked your car???

When I pointed it out he said, " You are not going to believe this, but when I get back to Australia next week I am going to pick up my brand new car, A Hyundai Coupe........

In Silver....................

That is wierd - it must be something in the water up there though. We got our whippet from a pub in Uppermill about four months ago. Last month we were on holiday in the moors and thought we'd pop into Uppermill for a bite to eat. The very first person we saw on getting out of the car was a chap with a whippet pup - we asked where he got him, turns out it was the same litter... dogs were pleased to see each other too.

A few years ago myself and an ex boyfriend had booked to go on holiday to Mallorca, we hadn't told anyone at the time where we were going, but later found out that my brother and his girlfriend had booked to go to Mallorca too, at the same time, in the same hotel

It's amazing, I've met thousands of people in my life and only a few of them have done similar things to me, despite past history that is similar. What are the chances of that eh?

When I went to University I spent the 1st year in self catering flats.

5 guys in my block, 3 (including me) called Dave. One of the Daves also had the same surname as me and a sister called Anne.

He also had the EXACT same date of birth

He lived upstairs, I lived in the room directly below.

Remember we once tried to work out the probabilities of that over a few beers. Seem to recall we worked it out at length

Talking of dogs, when we bought our poodle, we got in the car with him, my son named him Milo (after the Tweenie), we stopped at Pont Abraham services to let him have a wee... next to a family who had just bought a poodle and named him Milo.

There used to be a book, now sadly out of print, called "Why do buses come in threes", which looked at the maths of this.
The odds of co-incidence are not really that high. Each day you do thousands of things. They all pass un-noticed until there is a co-incidence.

I wrote to the author, Rob Eastaway, to say that I knew someone who had the same birthday as his wife. They got married on their birthdays and have two daughters of different ages both with the same birthday as the parents.

Rob Eastaway wrote back to say that the initial birthday might have been a common talking point when they met and helped them get together, and while there is some co-incidence the other things flow from there. Obviously the wedding was decided.

We looked at that during A-level Maths. I remember we looked through the school roll (little booklet with all the pupils in we were issued with) and every page, each containing about 50 pupils, had two children with the same birthday. I love the world of probability. Should have been a bookie!

The probability of two people having the same birthday within a group is quite surprising - on average, it takes only 23 people for the probability to be >50%, and by the time you have 30 people, the probability is >70%.

I had a bit of a weird coincidence the other week. I booked a massage for my boyfriend (not THAT kind of massage before you say anything) and while talking to her, we found out that she is a close friend of someone my boyfriend works with and the even belong to the same sailing club!

I have two brothers. One is married to a Julie, the other to a Helen. Helen is from Leicester. My g/f is a Julie... from Leicester. I used to live in Leicester Road. I now live in a road that shares a name with an area of... Leicester.
In the past, I had two other girlfriends called Julie, and two called Ann. Me Julie's middle name is Ann.

As an aside, one of my dad's former customers married a Helen... also from Leicester.

However I prefer Wensleydale cheese to Red Leicester
