But lets not kid oursleves that just because you add some colour and decent trim that the design of the car goes from duckling to swan....
That's precisely what's happened in the case of both MK1 and MK2 1-series in my opinion but I've never seen that happen with any other cars. I don't know why but I agree that normally, a base car sets the precedent.

So the change between Mk1 and Mk2 1 series - from boggo spec 118i to Estoril Blue M spec 130/135 is the only example of where the fundemental design of bodywork/car has gone from crap to gorgeous? really?
You wouldn't same the same of a white 1.6 Focus to Performance blue ST
or a white Astra LS to an elctric blue VXR

I think you're kidding yourself personally.

Tghe metal work has not changed, they've added some additional plastic cladding and badges in all cases, that doesn't change proportion, it's all about detail and stance... not car design.

It's like taking on a dreary/dull woman based on the how she looks when dunked in make up and wearing the right shoes.... all very nice but underneath the basics are still there... hehe

Yes and that's precisely why I wrote:

Hope that clarifies it for you.

Thanks for your time and dedication in researching ways to make me change a subjective and personal opinion based on simple observations.

This a little painful but I kind of stand by my original statement if that's OK because it's the reflection of what I think. I am not kidding myself in any way that I am aware of (I have no idea what you mean by that BTW). No subtext, no understatement nor figure of speech no codes to decypher (remember I am not British). So, again, I'll express again how it feels for me in the hope that it will be clear at last and that you're OK with it:

Now if you don't mind I need to get ready for my Ring trip tomorrow and kind of focus on functionality rather than aesthetics, namely change my brake pads.

I'll just let the images do the talking.

My subjective view is, the way BWM made the nose stick out where the badge is truly horrid.

The body kit helps, but its not enough to hide the nose and Polo rear (side on its fine!)

I'll go with "safer" Golf design.

I think BMW looks a lot better in 3 door form than 5 door, the proportions seem to work better and white doesn't do it any favours. It also looks quite Scirocco esq in 3 door and that blue.

One car that it hasn't been compared to is the GT86, but surely that is a competitor to anyone buying a 3 door GTI or M135 or A Class? Slightly less practical and a bit slower but also cheaper with the discounts now available. I guess the badge is also an important factor with this choice (albeit I opted for the GT86 last year with this choice but without the discount).

LOL. I can't believe you're still at it ! 10/10 for effort but I don't need carefully selected photos, as I have based my opinion on the cars I've actually seen in the flesh, always a better indicator. Again, it's subjective, not that I imagine you'll ever understand that word.

Just on the new topic being discussed......... surely its obvious to anyone with eyes that the new 1 series looks horrendously ugly? A real gawky looking ugly duckling.

To be honest as much as I love VWs the new Golf is a little bland. There isn't much between it and the 1-series in looks and both need to be in sporty trims for maximum visual impact.

Hard to see how gawky it is from the side profile pic, suprisingly it has 1 decent angle as you have highlighted. Got a particulary flattering one of the front end? Or the rear for that matter.

You're still at it too Nick!! hehe
still posting (the same)pics of gawky goodness which as we all know and appreciate you think is lovely. I'm honestly pleased for you, everyone should be made to understand that what we like as individuals is sacrosanct, an imoveable emotion.....and when a car enthusiast can spend that kind of money and be properly happy with every aspect of their purchase well I for one am envious....

One person's fully specced and bodykitted goddess is another's white good with ammended plastic bits however.
vive la difference or something.

I truly don't understand why people so many people think the 1 series is ugly.

I think that, in the flesh, it looks rather good and better than in pictures. It is quite a handsome little car.

It is the obvious competitor to the VW, but I think we should not overlook the new Mercedes A class.

An A250 is probably a nicer , more interesting, left field alternative to both Golf and BMW.

Can't help but think the Golf is 2k too expensive. Don't doubt it's abilities however. And I like the "classless" element of a Golf in that it really doesn't say anything about how rich or poor the owner is.

I guess it's a case of you don't have to look at how hideous the front is whilst you are driving it;)

I find cars such as this a real headache...the knowledge that it's built well, has real technical and engineering prowess behind it, has had a focused gestation and development period, has the perfomance to humble most things, and yet provide comfort and room and practicality to an extent, very nearly all things for all people....yet it's wrapped up in that outfit... frown

All very personal of course.
