Excuse my lack of engine knowledge, but if i open the bonnet and look straight down between the lump and the fans, there is a wheel attached to the engine with a belt around it - mine looks a rusty colour, it's the only rusty wheel in there - is this normal? My guess is that it can't be treated due to its use or something?

Are other people's rusty?!

Crankshaft pulley I assume?

Quite common for these to be made of ferrous material - hence the rust.

I couldn't stand the look of it either, so I painted mine with a gloss black rattle can. I slipped off the belt, cleaned it with some thinners, masked off behind the pulley with news paper and just gave it a few light coats. I turned the engine over on thew starter a few times to make sure I got it all covered. I did manage to get a bit of paint on the aluminium bar but it cleaned off with thinners. A nice satisyfing wet evening project !!

It's been done around six months now and still looks perfect, the rust still hasn't come through again, if it does I will just paint it again.

I also did the alternator pulley at the same time.

yes

Ferrous for the higher density and higher damping effect on the crank
The OCD amongst us sometimes paint it with black Hammerite wink
