My 2005 Boxster S has always been serviced at the supplying OPC and is now due it's 8 year major service.

The OPC have knocked their service price down from £610 to £425 (PCGB membership), but they will need to charge for brake fluid, spark plugs and airbag check on top of that.

The specialists seem cheaper, but not much. Will the OPCaccept me supplying my own oil, and should it make much of a difference in price?

I'd quite like to keep the OPC history, but there is not really any logical reason to do so if the cost is going to be much higher than I can get elsewhere (The car is going to be a long term keeper and I the FSH won't be adding much to the value of a 2005 car anyway!)

Any other suggestions welcome!

Find a good specialist. It won't make any difference to the value of an older car and may even enhance it if you pick the right ones. Let us know where you're based and someone will be able to recommend a good one near you.

For example, my specialist in Oxfordshire will do a major on a Boxster for £250+vat.

Thanks. I am in Kingston (SW London/Surrey border)

Subliminally, I already knew that. getmecoat

Someone will be along in a minute although GT One is the obvious one in that area.

Id expect your OPC to service the car with your own oil, provided that it was of the correct spec and Id expect them to adjust the invoice substantially.

My experience is that OPC will want the business and won't mind about you supplying the oil as long as it's the correct spec. I got some indy quotes for service and oil (and some from other OPC's too) and went along armed with what I wanted to spend to my OPC.

Interestingly, although they didn't match the price of the oil my OPC weren't particularly more expensive in their quote compared to me buying it and getting it delivered, c. 12 GBP I think.

I read on here a LOT that reselling is about 3 things:
1) condition, 2) condition and finally 3) condition.

What value would the OPC stamps mean to you? If I was keeping it for another 3 years I'd go indy, less than 3... I'd probably stay OPC.

Also if the OPC know the car they may make more effort to give you a better trade in later.

ETA: Isn't airbag check free as part of the diagnostic health check anyway?

The OPC have just come back to me about the oil. They'd discount the bill by £62, so they are around the same price I could buy it for on the high street (seems to be at least £30 for a 5 litre container of Mobil 1)

I think the OPC thing is just inertia for me, plus the fact I get a loan car. The car is in great condition with very small mileage, so I know that the stamps aren't going to make the blindest bit of difference to the value.

As it happens they have come in at less than the two specialists I have tried so far. Major service, brake fluid, spark plugs and airbag check for just over £700.

The airbag check is not free (£38 of the above total).

The only thing I probably won't do is renew the tyre inflation gel at £51! I am assuming that this is more or less the same stuff that I could buy in Halfords for £10 just in a fancy tin?

Just make sure that you are ready to politely decline when they call you mid service with £1000 worth of 'while we are in there'.

My favourite was the can of tyre weld that expires every 4 years and cost something like £100 to replace

I supply my own oil on my 986 service because I don't want Mobil 1 or their grade. My OPC (Tonbridge) are more than willing to use it. I've just bought 10L of 5W/50 Synth for £45 delivered. Funnily enough some indies won't do it.
I have had varying experience of a few indies when I had the 944 & of those I've used at least two I wouldn't touch with a barge pole. Whereas the OPC service was excellent, nice loan car & no hard sell on any other work. In fact there was no other work specced! I was able to talk to the technician & get his comments.

I'm in the exact same boat as you, just bought a 2005 C2S with only 35k, with fOPCsh, debating whether to keep up the main dealer history or go for a decent specialist (not sure who is local to me) as the major is due in a month.

A few questions, is PCGB membership worth the cost? Is it a good club to be a part of? And is it guaranteed to save me money on servicing at OPC Newcastle?

I had my OPC do a Major on my 2004 986 recently because none of the local indys could match the price. Its only when you start adding on non-"menu" stuff (spark plugs, brake fluid, etc) that the prices becomes uncompetitive. And you can't argue with a brand new 981 S for the day!
