Is the 458 a good looking car
Discussion
Hi all, I don,t want to upset anyone with a 458 here, but I don,t consider it to be that great, yes its awesome in its own way. So am I missing something here or am I just stuck in the past with perhaps my age of 57 dictating styles and fashions from long ago. The 246 Dino was beautiful, I consider the 360 to be the same but I just can,t get it with the 458. I would like your opinions if only to balance my mind, cheers Mike
Subjective but, for the record, I love the 458. I think it's the prettiest Ferrari since the 355 and completely moves the game on in terms of looking futuristic. I think the 360 and 430 look too 'tall' for my liking - the rear wheels look lost like they do on a small, tall city car and the 430 is 'chunky' looking too, not at all pretty with a rear end that's a complete mess. All subjective though, as I said.
I put it above the 360/430 but below 308/355
Its a good clean, well proportioned neat bit of design. I'm not overly keen on it's face, but as a whole it's certainly fresh, doesn't offend in the square way the Enzo did (to me).
It has technical aero merit, yet adheres to time honoured lines that in many ways could only be Ferraris'.
Actually ferrari seem to be on a high at the moment IMO...only the folding lid California offends my eyes.
I love the FF, the new LA I think is very pretty...fierce but pretty.
Born in the 70's the 308, BB512 and especially 288GTO are my Ferrari heros, but these modern ones are doing ok and I thnk we'll eb able to look back at them fondly on the whole. Ferrari are quitre capable of droppig a stylistci clanger now and again but I don't personally feel the 458 is one.

I love 'em, I think they've nailed the look. I like the 360/430 but I think the 458 is much nicer.
Mind, I also love the FF and the La Ferrari. I know lots think Ferrari have lost their way, but to me, I think they just keep getting better and have improved from cars like the 612 and 430. While I like the 430 and 612, I think more modern Ferrari's are very smart indeed.

Understandably better from some angle than others accepted, understand we all have differing views, and I understand the term 'fussy' as it applies to certain views of the car.
But look at this shot, if you have any petrol in your veins how can you not find the lines of this car from the side truly gorgeous?
Everyone has different tastes, but...come on...

As has been said, very much colour specific. A good friend had the above from new & being a little OCD, I washed it for him once or twice - the detail on it is pretty amazing IMHO, though you have to look to spot the real detail and some of the aero work on the top of the front wings etc that would have once been the prevail of F1 cars. BTW, I wasn't convinced by the white with black wheels until I saw it,and then changed my mind

The side profile of the car is probably it's best angle, but it still does nothing for me. It's the details that I dislike. The moustache things in the front bumper; the little vents that makes it look like the bonnet doesn't shut properly; the creases in the bonnet; the sweeping section with the holes in at the back (where the mesh goes on the bumper); the diffuser set up on the back; the huge wing mirrors; the not very pretty door handles. I could go on. But look at this shot, if you have any petrol in your veins how can you not find the lines of this car from the side truly gorgeous?

It could just be me though, I seem to be one of the few people who think the MP4-12C is a stunning looking car.

Looks fantastic IMO, F430 looks good as well, 360 was a good design but is dated now, 355 is a pretty car but from a different time, almost 20 years old.
Interesting point though....the 360, looked OK, nice when it came out but now is becoming more and more 'meh'The 355 or even 348 was had beautiful stance and proportion when it camne out and it is still held in high regard aesthetically now.
Age doesn't have to mean cars get worse looking....or even fade into the background
Good design remains good design forever...
Look at the Lambo thread where it was being suggested they had lost their way...lots of opinion and then someone posted a black and white shot of a pretty pure/original Countach. Yes you can tell it comes from the 70/80's but it still teaches Lambo a thing or two about drama, proportion, surfacing and detail...

Mike, bearing in mind our run out last Sunday I'm surprised you remember anything else except the rear of the 458! boxster boy! JohnGassing Station | Supercar General | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
