I think I fell in love today:

Followed this in to work, assumed he would pull off after a minute or two but he carried on into our forecourt, he then dumped it outside the showroom door and went in to discuss a problem with the Bluetooth on his new XJ. Left it running outside for about a quarter of an hour! Top bloke, had a good chat about the car. Just gutted that I had a completely rammed day ahead of me.

I wasn't sure if he was joking, but when I eventually dragged my bottom jaw off the car park and went inside to meet the owner and point out he had left it running he said "it's fine, take it for a spin round the block if you like". Now, if I hadn't been expecting such a crazy day and not been in a such a busy area I would have jumped at that offer, but I just couldn't. I know I will regret not even being cheeky enough to even blag a run up the road in it but I had got in early especially to sort out loads of bits before my customers were due in. Gutted!

He did give it the full beans back out of the forecourt on to the A40, what a stunning noise that thing makes.

If you read this, thank you so much for brightening up an otherwise dull and stressful bank holiday Saturday. Please come back on a quieter time of the week!

Thats Stirling Moss' is it not? Or it was at least.

I saw this one last year, and fell in love with it instantly. It is my all time favourite Ferrari I think.

That is gorgeous.

You sir are mad. I salute your devotion to customer service but suspect not driving a 250 SWB when you had the chance will come back to haunt you later in life (in twenty years will
you remember which "important" jobs stopped you?)

Am I the only one that thinks that the SWB is possibly
more attractive than the GTO?

there is no 'possibly' about it. the gto is purposeful, the swb is sublime.

I salute your willpower. I can understand not wanting to be "the man that wrecked the £100m 250GTO" as a certain vapid newspaper would no doubt incorrectly report wink

Almost as awesome as having a story about driving a 250SWB, is having a story about turning a drive in a 250SWB down.* smile

Ok, ok, just trying to make you feel better here

SWB is a much more desirable car than the GTO for me.

What a generous owner, you should have accepted the offer!

Ok so I'm afraid I'm gonna have to make you feel worse. That is not just any old SWB, but one of the two driven in period by Moss not to mention being a full competition Alloy car.

I know, I know - I must be insane, but the combination of our rammed forecourt meaning the first thing would be an eight point turn just to get out (no sensors or camera apparently!) then onto a steep uphill slip road onto the A40 which is always full of idiots made me sweat just thinking of the possible bork factor!

And as I said, I don't think my crazy Irish woman coming in to pick up her 4th XK or Mr retired lecturer who's just treated himself to a new XF would have understood that I was running late due to taking some old car for a spin....

You could always pop in with yours when its quieter if you would like.....? Could swap for a V8 F-Type for an hour....? ;-)

Ex Rob Walker. I think its the one moss won the TT at goodwood in. By all accounts an amazing spot

I have people who have owned both swb and gto saying the swb is a nicer car to drive, even though the latter has 5 gears and rolls a bit less. Both very desirable.

I do believe this car was also a part of the centre display at the Ferrari Museum a year or two ago. It was my favorite car there - I must have spent 20 mins drooling over it...

I remember once seeing one of these, and similarly to the OP, completely fell in love with it
As you do, I then did a small amount of research into them when I got home, but seeing how deep your pockets need to be to buy, let alone run one, put it completely into my 'one day if I won the euro millions' garage
I think you'll regret that missed driving chance forever, although it could've ended up as one of those 'never meet your hero' experiences

That is my all time favourite ferrari , always prefer the SWB to the GTO.

It would be in my euro millions win dream garage too.

Do not regret not taking the chance to have a quick drive, I have passed on the chance of having a quick go in a few cars that would be far to expensive to have a unplanned incident in. Just seeing this car would be enough for me.

Great thread, thanks for posting.

There was a fantastic article about this car in "Motor Sport" magazine last year when it was driven through the Scottish highlands by Ian Callum, the Jaguar designer.

It's owned by a chap called Clive Beecham

http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=clive+beecham&amp...

who sounds like a wonderful down to earth chap - I seem to recall that it was driven from London up to Scotland and whilst there developed a suspension problem and he had the local village garage it Scotland where the test was taking place put it on the ramp and just weld it up !

If you check back issues of "Motor Sport" it's a great article with some excellent photos

Hell of a spot, Hell of a car, Hell of an offer.

Hell of a missed opportunity (but would have been brave to take it out IMO).

Spooky! We discussed this very article! Apparently that drive clashed with the launch of the then new Jaguar CX-75. Callum rang his boss to say that he couldn't be there due to opportunity to drive his hero car, after a long pause it was all sorted and agreed that he shouldn't pass up such an opportunity ( unlike me - grrr!)

I'm just glad that people enjoyed the pics / short story as it went over the head of everyone else there at th time.

Clive made the point of saying that he was glad to run into someone who appreciated what it was, as he had taken it to Ferrari garages and the staff there Harv been clueless as to what it was / how important a car it is. Incredible really.

Totally agree you will always look back at this missed opportunity - you may NEVER again have the chance.
No matter how busy I was I'd find time to just take it up a street at the bare min.

Have to say that the owner giving the chance to evidently a car lover to drive is a top move (either mad or maybe when he was younger the same happened to him and that got him into cars?)

Lovely pics too.

I know, I have been very fortunate with motoring opportunities in the past and have always grabbed them with both hands (Ferrari 360 spider manual at 19 before being in the trade then loads of Porsches, Lambos, other Ferraris, every AMG, Audi RS, BMW M car, SLR's, Carrera GT's etc) but I really did have to have a moment of thinking about the what's & ifs etc. could you imagine the phone call "er, I've stuffed it in Hanger Lane tunnel boss, I assume our insurance will cover it?? Hello, hello?" Oh, and those German football fans will just have to wait while we clear the mess up... (it was nuts round there all day yesterday, have never seen so much police activity) - You're fired!!

If I am in anything special I always let people sit in and play around. Remember taking a work experience kid out in a Vanquish S and him smacking his head on the passengers window when I fish tailed out of a wide empty junction. It obviously hurt but he was still ginning from ear to ear. Brilliant. No doubt health and safety would have an issue with it though.

Pics were taken with a very shakily held iPhone, nothing special!
