Insurance Q, with one years NCD on Provisional.....

Right, So I have a full licence, and have passed my bike test in the beggining of 2009, but have only just passed my car test.
was hoping on getting an MX 5, but the insurance cost will be too much.
I have 1 years NCD on a provisional licence under my dads insurance (as he drives it more than me) and i actually have the 1 years NCD aswell, as part of the policy, unlike a lot of other polices
having done some quotes on an MX 5, or even a 306 1.4, its still to much compared to my fiesta 1.3 on my dads insurance.
what other cars would be viable to get that would be better equipped than a mk 3 fiesta? i dont necessarily mean faster, but something that would have better toys, and actually have better 'grunt' in 3-4-5th, as the fiesta has no go whatsoever in 3-4-5th and cannot reach anywere near the top speed its is spost to. or even 100 (having never tried, it would probably struggle getting to 100, even with a few miles of empty straight motorway)
not that I care about the top speed in a car, as i have an 800cc motorcycle that will do 160, (again, having never reached that, but it will reach it) but as it doesnt really have any 'go' in 3-5th it is a bit annoying and have to floor it on the dual carrige way/motorway to overtake something and that is really a pretty slow overtake aswell.
anyone have any idea what car would be better than a nackered 1.4 MK3 fiesta that is nackered?
that is cheap enough on insurance so I can actually save some money for an MX 5 + insurance? as i did a quote on insurance, with 4 years driving with 1 years NCD and pass plus, its 560 quid, rather than 1300-1600 quid, which is unacceptable...
