I once pulled alongside a velvet red tiptronic 964 at the Tyne tunnel, which had a towbar on.

I'm sure a guy on here made his own a few years back too. May have been the same car.

This is why I love the 911.
Imagine any other supercar been so practical. I doubt it some how.
Great pic.

'manouches' or 'gitans' in france. The travellers. A lot more common than you'd think. God only knows where $$€€ comes from.

No I spotted him as I pulled away from peage, no suprise he accellerated away well, I was laden with a car & took miles to catch him as he was towing at a good pace for a tin slug tower, I passed snapped pics & he later passed me as I neared my junction exit.

Where on earth is the tow attached down there with the exhausts and engine immediately behind the bumper.

And am sorry but I find the idea of pulling a "roulotte" with a 911 even more revolting than with a plain vanilla family car.

I did the Le Mans Classic in a red 996 C4S with roof box, it worked really well. The guy behind me in a 997 GT3RS looked worried at 140mph - I had forgotten it was there! Ooops!eek

I was under the impression that in Europe you can only use approved tow bars, no way can this be approved by Porsche?
Unless of course the UK is the only country in Europe taking the European rules seriously, but I can't see that smile

My old man was looking for one to fit to a TT to tow a small boat but nothing is approved by Audi so couldn't...

Yes that was us, made a few for odd cars, it all started with my old mans 996 after a right botch job by a well regarded towbar specialist in the UK that makes them to order who made the bar to bolt to the bodywork and the engine. Result a solidly mounted engine that transmitted all it's vibrations along the bar in to the shell.

The one we made is totally invisible when not fitted, has a neat flying lead for the electrics tucked up in the engine compartment. Obviously it's only for a bike rack though......

Incidentally the back end of the 996 on models lend themselves well to a towbar, it's no different design wise to BMW/VW at the end of the chassis legs, a well fitted bar is just as capable on a 911 as any normal car. But hasn't been tested by manufacturer so shouldn't be used to tow trailers etc.

Even using it for a bike rack wouldn’t be allowed though right or is it really only “actual” towing that requires type approval?

Illegal unless the car is homologated for towing and there is a train weight stamped on the VIN plate.

You can't tow / fit a towbar on / use a towbar mounted bike rack on a M140i as BMW didn't homologated it for towing. (But they did for the 128ti)

Random thread resurrection.

More importantly, it's nine years, eleven months exactly since Crimp was banned.

He'll have been doing something useful all of that time instead of being on PH hehe
