BMW 328i (E36): PH Fleet

More BMW vs BMW action this month as Dale meets a fellow PHer for some car park fun...

I've been driving a lot of more modern BMWs lately, including E46s, E90s and even an F21 race car (more on that later). But there's something delightfully clunky about the old E36 that just makes me smile.

Now this is what you call 'driver-focused'
Now this is what you call 'driver-focused'
The dashboard, for example, is wonderful. All that black vinyl and plastic lines up and faces the driver, like the passenger doesn't matter. All they get is one little vent and a very discreet glovebox. Not even an airbag. I like that lack of technology too, it means it's still a pure (if somewhat agricultural) experience.

Of course, at the same time, I also acknowledge that the E46 has a much better chassis, whilst the E90 325i makes way more power than my 328i and has an even better chassis. And as for the new F-series cars... wow. They're incredible.

Of course, now that I have the Nitrons and Spires setup, I'm only talking about a potentially better chassis on those cars. Because the 'old' E36 is still a bit of a weapon on track.

328i vs. M3 3.0: it's on!
328i vs. M3 3.0: it's on!
At the last Destination Nurburgring track day I found myself nodding and agreeing on all these points with another PHer by the name of Alex. Or Iguana as he's known on the forums. He'd brought not one, but two E36 track day cars to the event and we basically stood in the car park like a pair of old gits putting the world to rights on the subject of modern cars versus old cars.

With only a few hundred Nordschleife laps to his credit, he wanted to know if I'd follow him and give some feedback on his lines. The initial idea was for Alex to drive his own 328i, but in the end I convinced him to take the other E36 that he'd brought, a lovely M3 3.0. Hey, I wanted a challenge.

What a brilliant few laps we had! Any PHer who's done a track day with mates will already know what I'm talking about, but this was just huge fun. A kind of very loose competitiveness that's just the right side of the naughty line (Darren, the organiser, always makes a point of saying "No ****ing racing!" at every DN briefing).

'Lizard1' M3 uses racing slicks
'Lizard1' M3 uses racing slicks
Iguana's M3 would, naturally, pull away if the pilots were equal in experience. But we had just enough differences between us to keep it close. His second-hand slicks were still a bit grippier than my road-legal Federal semi-slicks. My Nitrons were obviously doing a much better job of keeping the wheels on the ground too, compared to the cheaper generic coil-overs on the "Lizard1"-plated M3. His 70hp advantage was matched by my slight lack of fear, general over-exuberance and not having a passenger like he did.

We had a couple of hours together at the track day and the ratio of driving to nattering was about 1 to 3. We spent 1.5hrs talking and only 30 minutes driving. But sometimes that's all you need.

In the weeks following that battle I've been racing some rather more sophisticated BMWs that are much, much quicker. But honestly, I can't wait for next week and the opportunity to drive my clunky old E36 on the next DN track day. It'll be brilliant, I just know it.

Great stuff!

70bhp difference, eh.. Did I miss the dyno results from an M50 manifold swap on your car, Dale? Very keen to see what it shows.

Great video, best so far!

Think of the buzz you would be getting in that 458!

M3 seemed to have alot more grunt regardless of 2 passengers.

M3 is always going to have more grunt full stop but lets not forget how capable the 328i is in this state. A great motor, would never get rid of mine smile

Close Laps with mates are always the most enjoyable . driving

I`d be interested to see how much grip difference there actually is between new FZ201`s and old slicks.

M3 is 286, or 321 in Evo 3.2 guise. Dale refers to a 70bhp difference but it's not leaping out at me from an old Parker's used price guise how much power the 328i put out.

Looking at the classifieds, it seems the 328i was 190bhp so I reckon Lizard's M3 is a 3 litre.

I was asking about the manifold swap as I know Dale was planning on it, possibly with a remap as well, which should have been good for 215bhp or so (the 328i is 192bhp standard). That makes the 70bhp difference to the M3, which is mentioned as a 3.0 so 286bhp!

Was a cracking few laps that day, was the final day of 3 full days of the always ace Destination Nurburgring track days & the last day, the 'ringmeisters event was beyond epic.

Only pain pretty much the whole day was on that vid, on my lap 2 when I'm in front of Dale despite the near deserted track I was slowed badly by an errant non mirror checking & slow French reg 997Turbo, up Kesselchun at Mutkurve from flat it 5th at 120mph 'ish' & is steep uphill & I would have been flat, but thanks to Porker ment braking hard & down to 3rd pah, on target was a nice 7.54 BTG but alas it was not to be, have to try again in August.

Ref power, yip its a healthy 3.0 (grp N restrictor, ARPs, de-cat, Enda map) I prefer them over 3.2s, & still all steel panels & glass but it was built properly into an evo shell, running a 5 speed with evo dif, lightweight loom etc & is a pretty light car, similar weight to Dales 328.

I think Dale is right ref the power, is no point believing the power babble from Parkers, I've run 4 of my e36s on the same dyno & on the same day, the figures are not really important as every dyno varies, but I own the sister car to Dales, another 4 door silver 328, also fair miles & a bog standard engine & it was only 65bhp behind that M3 & 53bhp behind my regular road M3.

For ref on that dyno-

328 stock 210bhp
328 M50, bbtb 221bhp & flat midrange
328 as above + Enda map 228bhp but much more importantly= got the midrange back
M3 road car stock 263bhp
M3 Track car 275bhp

My track 328 with M50, bbtb& Enda map just 47bhp behind M3, so once Dale does that its gunna be a lot tougher, I'll have to ditch the passenger then wink

If you are in the mood for M3 track vids, Spa last yr, best bit is from approx 6.30 is the best bit- GT2 chasing wink

Have been pondering selling the M3 after the August DN as too many toys but as ever can never make my mind up.

"only" a "few hundred" laps eh?

I have a 328i that is currently for sale, but a couple of times recently I've left it in gear for a bit longer and it does sound good, makes me wonder about a ring trip so that I get a bit of use out of these brand new tyres.
