Watching Only Fools and Horses repeat on GOLD and noticed how many laugh out loud lines in the 80's if said now would be on the daily mail as 'racist' and homophobic
maybe casual racism was more acceptable in the 80's
they refer to the shop as " shop"
call people 'nufters' and 'banditos'

"Blazing Saddles" and 'Til Death us Do Part" were NOT in the same mould as the simplistic racist humour of "Mind Your Language". They were actually designed to make racists look like idiots and, in their own way, were instrumental in changing most of our atitudes to racism.Airplane
Till death do us part
"Love Thy Neighbour" actually was more subtle too than most people realise. If any of you are old enough to recall, the white neighbour was the dumb one with the plain ordinary looking wife whilst the black neighbours next door were good looking, intelligent and sophisticated.
People tend to castigate "Love Thy Neighbour" without really remembering what it was actually like.

Although the point of Alf Garnett was to hold a mirror to casual racism. Warren Mitchell used to tell how he would get stopped by people who would say I love what you're saying about them coons Alf & he'd tell them the point was he was taking the piss out of people like them.Airplane

They were all about making fun of the bigots and racists - something that most nowadays don't seem to see from these shows. I guess they like to think that they're more 'progressive' whatever that means, these days, and everything in the '70's and '80's was crass and racist, when the truth is somewhat different.

I would say one of the worst offending comedy series of that era and one which hardly ever gets mentioned when commenting on bad and offensive comedy is "On the Buses". I challenge anyone to watch that today without cringing.
I found it far more sexist than anything else.Gassing Station | TV, Film, Video Streaming & Radio | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
