Volvo D5 Noise!
Discussion
Question re the varying sound of the diesel engine.. engine in question is the Volvo D5 euro 4 unit.
Some days its sounds spot on (for a diesel) the 5 pot sounding OK with it’s nice warble (for a diesel!) however other days its sounds more.. well not so well and sounds more old school diesel if you know what I mean?
So my question is, is there anything which might cause the motor to sound better on other days than others, ambient temperature, soot level of the dpf etc..
Fuel wise it always has V power diesel (or alike) in it and it’s 82k miles on a 58 plate
Cheers!

Had one of these a few years back and agree that for a diesel it sounds pretty special.
As others have suggested the temperature of the engine has an effect. Top engine mounts (what looks like a strut brace under the bonnet' tend to fail on these and need replacing. It isn't an expensive job but did make mine sound (and feel) worse when it went.

My 2002 S60 D5 is exactly the same, rougher sounding on some mornings than others.
I've just disconnected/blanked off the vacuum mounts on mine whilst in the process of diagnosing another issue and I can't say I've noticed much difference in noise or harshness with them off tbh.
That said, it could be either of them is knackered anyway so mine might well feel rougher than one with perfectly working mounts.
I have occasional boost issues with mine though which is also leading me to suspect a possible failing vac mount as I've already checked/replaced most other things relating to the problem.
Cracking cars when they're running right, can be a pain or even impossible to troubleshoot without the proper Volvo diagnostic gear though

On that front, after 3 days of tearing my hair out I have finally got my eBay DiCE machine and VIDA 2013 up and running.Great bit of kit and for 80quid its a no brainer to have IMO.
Is it ok? I'd rather spend the money on that than a one off code read.
The only windows machine I own is a 3 year old Dell Inspiron running Windows 7 Home will that be ok?

ps.
The lower g'box torque mount is also worth checking out - another common failure that is easy to remedy
ETA: The knock you describe could very easily be the g'box torque mount.
Axle ping is mainly the earlier models, depending on what type of bolts you have in the driveshafts. Pop the covers off the wheel centre and make sure they are nipped up tight
I have a knock when pulling away. Never thought of a gearbox mount. Need to investigate that! The lower g'box torque mount is also worth checking out - another common failure that is easy to remedy

Any links to a place to buy the parts?

For the parts: either eBay (quite a few Volvo dealers selling parts) or try FRF Volvo in Swansea. Mention the Volvo Owners Club and you get a discount. I have also ordered quite a few OE parts via Skandix.de, but postage to the UK might be prohibitive.
For Dice/VIDA. It is extremely picky about what it works on - im reasonably handy with computers and it took me about 10hrs to get it working - you could of course be much luckier! VIDA 2013 should run just fine on Win7 and IE10, but it wouldnt play ball for me - in the end I got it working via a Virtual Machine running XP SP3 - even that was a pain in the arris because I had to search out and download various patches and hotfixes to the .net framework to get it all talking to each other.
However, now its working its brilliant - a really super comphrehensive tool and can do trick stuff like 4C suspension alignments and gearbox resets etc.
The DiCE came from Hong Kong - 60gbp + 20gbp delivery. Arrived in less than a week and seems well made for what is a Chinese knock off!
Thanks, i've no need for the computer stuff but will have a think about the components. I'm reasonably handy with the spanners but mine is a much older car (2004) so bolts that have been exposed to the elements might be the biggest issue. For Dice/VIDA. Mounts as has been suggested then check the flywheel as when these wear they can sound awful. My previous car was a late 04 V70 D5. 183k hard miles.
The only bolts I ever had a problem with were the droplink bolts where they linked to the suspension uprights. Completely welded in by grime - an angle grinder saw to them!!
In general I was extremely impressed by the longevity of the Volvo components and the overall condition on what was a well used and abused car. Many parts of the engine bay stil looked brand new.
Agree with this. Drop links were a pain to change but a gas torch got rid of them. I have found that the OE parts are much tougher than anything else, even the stuff labelled 'heavy duty' or whatever. Lower control arms failed at 15K compared to 110K on the first set, 10% in the cost of the component just not worth the 'saving'.The only bolts I ever had a problem with were the droplink bolts where they linked to the suspension uprights. Tough cars overall and although the electrics can be a bit suspect on some overall one of the more well built cars around today.
