In terms of tech, How they drive, reliability and running costs are there any differences between these 2?

No obviously there will be some differences but I love both cars and would be tempted by one next (not sure which series yet, maybe around 2008 era) and wondering are there any noticeable differences? The S is obviously more practical, spacious etc but aside from better looks is the CL better at anything else? Refinement any different?

Thanks in advance

Main difference I would say is residuals. biggrin

I was looking at this recently, by the time an S Class is down to £18k the CL is still at £35k.

CL all day every day for me, it looks a very cool sleek car, the S Class looks like you are someones driver. Still a lovely car, but not the same as a big Merc coupe.

I agree, the CL is something else, such a special looking car in the 215 and 216 forms (not a fan of the one before). The S Class looks fantastic for what it is but not as classy as a CL.

Apparently the suspension is different (at least on the C215) and also, the C216 looks like it has a nicer interior than the S Class.

I suppose mpg will be similar but just to say my CLS 320CDI is giving me 750 miles on one tank at motorway speed.

Hmm, I honestly find the CL a bit pointless. It's a massive coupe, I just don't see why you'd go for that apart from slighty better looks and that's arguable too depends on your point of view. With the S, everyone travels in comfort why cramp everyone in, that is the point of the S it's a limo with loads of space and luxury that drives like a much smaller more nimble car. The S is also iconic. Don't get me wrong, I love the CL especially the newer ones, I think they look great, but I don't think I'd ever bother faced with the choice. To date I've had two W221 S Class. A E320 CDI SWB and a S65 AMG. Wonderful cars.

S class, CL has a big ugly droopy window at the back, they're hideous.

S class is a proper big saloon car

More stylish.

Prettier dash.

Overall it just feels more special.

S Class is great.......if you want to look like you're driving someone for a living.

Saloon to me always looks like the nothing car.

You buy a hot hatch when you get to 21.
You then get a bit older and buy a nice coupe.
When you get a family you buy a nice estate.
Get a bit older and have even more dogs and kids and crap and you get the 4x4.
Then you buy a 911 and get it out of your system.

The saloon is people who don't have a family or what the boss says you can have as it is cheaper than the estate and less flashy than the coupe.

To me the saloon is the most pointless of all models.

Unless you buy an AMG or M car of course, then they are a nice Q Car. wink

Don't get me wrong, I would have a nice S Class, but if they were both the same price it would be CL every time.

I have a CL 140 and a CL 216, I have had the 216 for 15 months and the best car by far that I have owned, if you hardly ever use the rear seats then it fine. I have virtually every option on mine and I use them all, the 273 engine is so economical and nearly AMG performance.

I think that st4 does not like the CL because I have one, and he has never traveled in one. I have been out many times in the 222, the 222 has airmatic and the 216 ABC

I may change to a blue version if I can find one with all the toys, nothing wrong with the one I have but at 78 I have to use up some money

Saloons look bettr IMHO but the CL comes with the ABC system which improves handling and body roll apparently.

I'd have another saloon if I didnt have a camping holiday fetish, they look so good, 2dr cars need to have folding roofs IMHO or the engine in the middle or back. Making a 2dr car out of a 4dr seems silly

See I'm the opposite. I prefer coupes, my old man has an E92 M3 coupe and prefer it to the saloon. I also think the CL looks better than the S.

I love the look of the CL, but the S is stonking value in comparison and still a great car, especially with the added practicality. It's a tough one.

The main thing when going for a CL is that it is built after Dec 06 so the the bush mod is modified, so any 2007 CL will be OK and prices now down to £17k and still falling . The new S class 2 door as it will be called is not due till mid 2014.

The other thing is no diesels for the CL, my 5500 does an average of 26mpg and up to 30 on runs

This is the early example of the 216, valid till mid 2010, it is fitted with the AMG body kit, the 20" AMG wheels I have taken off, and it on SL600 wheels

For me there is no contest. The CL is better looking and you see loads of 320 S-classes on the roads but the W216 CL is a rare beast, particularly the AMGs. Access to the rear seats is good enough that even my elderly mother has no issues getting in and out of the rear seats!
