Hi I'm an Audi Allroad 3.0Tdi owner, it's a 2007 (first of the 'new' engine) done 127,000 miles.
Engine has been great but has developed a disturbing noise which is a knocking sound that can be heard when the engine has warmed up and follows the revs (rpm) but is silent when idle.

My local Audi centre can't find any engine management problems & diagnostics do not bring anything up, they've tried swapping the injectors over to see if the noise moves, it didn't. Audi now want £1000 (9hrs work) to take the head off, before they find the problem and another £1000 to put it back together.
It seems crazy that such an obvious knocking sound cannot be diagnosed.

The engine is juddering slightly which you would have thought is another indicator to the problem, but Audi are giving me no confidence that if I spend £2000 opening the engine to inspec that they have any idea what it could be or will find the problem.

There is no loss of power, no smoking, oil pressure has been tested and is fine.

HELP !! (PS - It's not a rant at Audi...just any mechanical advice suggestions thanks)

Try another Audi garage that knows what it's doing. Yours sounds like a bunch of clowns.Seriously, get more opinions before opening your wallet, someone will know what it is.I hope it's not 2 grands worth.

Unless it's under warranty with the Audi garage, i'd be taking it to an independant garage rather than an Audi main dealer. There's plenty of VAG specialists around who should be able to give you a better idea of whats going on.

Where are you located?

There are some very good independent VAG specialists around.

If you post this in the VW Audi Skoda Seat section, Tame Technician might be able to help you out.

Sounds like a hydraulic lifter/tappet problem to me... Definitely in the valve train, and depending on the service life of the engine not to be unexpected at 127K.

Thanks for all your messages, I am getting it back monday. I'm based Preston/Blackpool area and I know of an independent VW/Audi specialist at Blackpool, just thought the Preston main dealership would pinpoint the problem.
Will let you know if I make any progress !

Computer says no.

The main dealers don't have mechanics anymore, they have computers that tell them what order to replace things in.
All the mechanics have got jarred off and set up proper garages where you might actually repair something rather than simply swap out new bits for old in an attempt to sort it out.

So not only are their hourly rates in main dealers the most expensive the repairs often include loads of work that simply didn't need doing, that you pay for as well.

I remember talking to a VW mechanic I knew about 10-15 years ago, he was saying just that. All the decent mechanics in his garage were leaving in droves all that was left was trainees. Seems to be a similar story in a lot of dealerships these days.

Op. What sort of noise is it, a ticking or a knocking? As it's not there at tick over when the oil pressure is low I wouldn't expect it to get worse when revved as the oil pressure will be a lot higher. With this in mind I'd tend not to think followers. Has anyone done a compression test to eliminate bad valve, rings or bent rod?

Thanks again, apparently compression is also fine ?
