As per the title, how long does a set of tyres last on your car(s)? The only set of tyres I have had long enough to nearly wear out from new have done over 20k and I think they will get to at least 25k miles. I am interested to know what sort of mileage other people get out of their tyres, partly because I am looking at the running costs of various cars and tyres a are a surprisingly large factor.

So:
  • What tyres do you use?
  • What car are they on?
  • How much do they cost?
  • How many miles does a set last?
  • What sort of driving does this encompass?
So for myself:
  • Michelin Pilot Sport 3
  • Clio 182
  • ~£115 each fitted
  • Looking like about 25k miles
  • Mostly motorway and fast A/B roads
This works out at about 1.84p per mile in tyre wear.

  • Yokohama AD07 LTS
  • Elise
  • About £550 a set.
  • About 20k miles.
  • Almost entirely B-roads.
So about 2.75p/mile.

I once took a set of P6000s off the front of a diesel Mondeo because they'd been on so long and not worn down I thought there was some voodoo at play. I think I'd done around 40k in them, maybe a bit less but they werent near the limit.

G/F's Ka just failed it's MOT on worn fronts, inside of each tyre balding - it's a 54 plate with 40k on it. I think they might be the original tyres

Best effort for shortest life was a set of Bridgestones, very soft tyre, managed to get about 9k out of them. I'd say 20k on a set of fronts for FWD car would be fair

  • Hankook RW06
  • Mercedes Vito van.
  • Approx £400 fitted.
  • A bit over 40,000 miles.
  • Urban, rural, motorway, (often carrying a reasonable weight, and not hanging around too much)

I thought 40,000 from a set of winter tyres was not too bad considering they are meant to melt on the first of May. I got them fitted about late November and they lasted 2 full winters and 2 full summers, not enough good tread to see them through another winter, but they could probably have done a few more warmer drier miles.

I wonder if this is part of the reason P6000's get a bad rap on the internet. Do people (maybe without knowing) run an odd compound that doesn't wear, thus also making them not very grippy?

I only say this, as I went through a couple of pairs of P6000's in my XJ-S (fronts more than rears). But I never had trouble with grip/traction with them. But 5000-6000 miles was the sort of distance they lasted, if that.

Hankook Ventus V12 Evo K110
Civic Type-R (EP3)
£95 each fitted
Around 10k (2 and a bit years)
Commuting, MWays, A-B Roads, spirited driving.

Forgot to mention this is for the fronts, this thing eats them. Rears last for many years ! I've had the car 6 1/2 years and only replaced them once i think.

I had a set on my old 560SEC, they had been there for some time when I got it and they still looked brand new after the 6.5k I did in it. The rears in particular did not lead an easy life either. I think they must make them out of melted down biscuit trays or something confused.

I change cars too regularly, I think I've only ever paid for 6 tyres (not sets), that's over 20 cars. It's never a factor when buying a car.

Kumho

Golf Tdi

£40 a pop

8k

Lots of cornering in town - fast food delivery.

(I've found that premium tyres, which cost about £80-100, last the same length of time. So ditchfinders are sufficient)

I did a poll on this some years ago, and the most common tyre life expectancy was 10k, followed by (bizzarley) 20k+.

I have no idea how people get 20k+ miles out of a tyre.

Car: 106 Rallye
Tyre: Toyo T1-R 195/50/15
Cost: £40 each delivered + fitting of, say, £10 each.
Life: Around 15k front (new to wear bars), double for the rear.

Cost/mile is 0.33p for the front, 0.16 for the rear if you run them to the wear bars. Changing at 3mm (as I do), it's more like 0.5p and 0.25p.

I'm aware that that's quite cheap, especially for a tyre that works rather well. biggrin
