Chaps,

I've just bought a 91k mile E60 M5 and I'm looking at my warranty options. It has a full BMW Main Dealer Service History except the service before last which was an Indy.

I bought it eyes wide open and I'm fully aware that some people would not run one of these without a BMW warranty but life's too short etc. etc. smile

It currently has a basic Warranty Direct Policy on it but I'm been looking at something more comprehensive. I'm not really worried about every little niggle as I'm happy to sort that - this is more of a backup against a major failure - something like the engine or gearbox going pop.

BMW Prices are as follows (assuming they allow the Indy service)

Comprehensive without Emergency Service
£0 xs £3,889
£250 xs £2,319

Named Component without Emergency Service
£0 xs £3,146
£250 xs £1,888

Driveline without Emergency Service
£0 xs £2,083
£250 xs £1,271

Warrantywise

£50 xs £100 per hour Labour rate, £7000 claim limit with all the add ons £1,043

Click4Warranty

5* 24 month policy, £7000 claim limit with all add-ons less the £100 discount voucher they sent me is £600.
Labour rate is £35 per hour upon digging unless you use Halfords!

Warranty Direct

Initial quote online was about £2,300 but I've since had them on the phone. Nice enough chap but all salesman are. They are offering their SecureCare product at £930 per year with £70 for an inspection so all cover starts straight away. They go to great lengths to point out that they cover 'wear and tear' rather than 'premature wear and tear' like their competitors, the labour rate is £200 per hour enabling me to use the main dealer quite comfortably but the contribution for parts is only 50% due to the mileage on the car.

The click4warranty one is the cheapest but I'm not really interested in having to use Halfords.

Warrantywise sound brilliant according to their own advertising but I'm not convinced.

I'm leaning toward either the Warranty Direct cover or BMW Driveline with a £250 xs as for much more than that I'd rather put the money aside and self-insure.

Thoughts? I've read plenty of reviews on the internet but first hand experiences of any of the above would be useful.

Cheers!

Phil

I wouldn't bother with prices and excesses of those prices.

Me neither, at those rates self insure and live with the realisation that if the motor goes the car may have to be parted out.

No idea if they're any good but there are often motors and gearboxes knocking around on ebay if the worst happens.

I'm pretty much of the same opinion, £1,000 is not a problem but when you are only getting 50% on the parts you might as well risk it yourself.

Cheers,

If the indy service was done on time and with oem parts then warranty with BMW shouldn't be a problem but I would rather put alittle away in the bank instead incase the worst happens.

My main concern (apart from clutch) with high mileage (and lower) is the rod bearings which seem to be popping up

Mine had a clutch at 59k so I know it's got one with a nicely greased release bush/bearing in it but I scared myself silly with the rod bearing failures and reading all the threads on M5Board the other day.

The only thing is, has anyone in the UK had a rod bearing failure? I could only find US ones?

I was considering spending the warranty money getting them done for peace of mind anyway.

I always said I'd never buy one due to the crap MPG and range with the small tank but my god, what a machine smile

Cheers!

For what its worth take out the BMW AUC warranty, do not listen to the bullst warranty direct sales "our warranty more comprehensive than BMW AUC" it is not !
As we found out, £600 top spec warranty direct, BMW £900 ! and a £1400 bill for a footwell module, which BMW AUC would have covered

I pay £138 a month on my E63 M6 for fully comp BMW Mondial warranty with £250 excess. Reasonable for peace of mind but if it was much more than that I'd save the cash in a repair fund I think

has anybody actually got any positive experiences with warranty wise or warranty direct?

anyway, with my last E60 M5 i was paying £200 p/m (it had done 75k miles +) fully comprehensive cover for piece of mind.

To be honest I'd probably be tempted to put £200 a month towards the stonking F10 M5 deals currently available rather than a warranty.

I definitely need to hear some positive stories about Warranty Direct though before pulling the trigger.

So basically I'll probably suck it up and take the risk myself or do some creative man maths and order an F10 smile

Absolutely. They will weasel out off paying by whatever means possible.
When you are buying, nothing will cause a problem. When you try to claim, everything will be a problem. Worst £1000 I have ever spent.

Any independant warranty company will be like this. I have AA named component cover that came with my car. What you need to be careful of is their terminology, the part has to "unexpectedly" fail. No wear and tear, or failure due to expected life span etc. As far as I can tell its not worth the paper its written on, as any failure is surely wear and tear on a used car?

I had both ball joints replaced because they were very worn but was told unless they had totally snapped they weren't covered despite being named on the list of components.

I'll never pay my own money for a warranty ever, best of putting the money in the bank and funding any repairs yourself.

We all seem to be broadly in agreement - BMW if you're happy with the cost or put some money aside and self-insure.

Cheers!

My E39 M5 goes on Saturday after over 4yrs with it, its a right wrench to let it go but i hope getting into an E60 M5 will take my mind off it. I test drove one last week and they seem so complicated compared to the E39.
