Best solution to put on a chassis to prevent rust?
Discussion
Hi,
I want to treat my chassis with something to prevent rust and protect it from the sea air at St Andrews.
What is the best solution to use?
I have tried waxol but it does not look very good.
Would hamerite work just as well?
Is there any that would protect it and last for a good 10 years or so between applications?
Thanks William

Powder coat it, although really you've got to do this when theres nothing attached to it, like a body, engine etc.
POR 15 is pretty good and seems to be tougher than hammerite. Hammerite is weak as a weak thing and will chip off very easily.
I did the underside of the Saab with POR 15 (after I'd stripped all the old underseal off) then coated the POR 15 with Tetra Seal, worked a treat.

I've got some stuff in an aerosol that I blagged from my dad, much runnier than waxoyl, none of that faffing with buckets of hot water to get it to run, it's very liquid and sprays into gaps / runs insides panels really well.
Probably not quite what you're after, but well worth spraying into sills/doors, etc.

Have a look at a product called Rust Bullet. It is similar to POR-15 but easier to use and seems to perform better in the scientific tests shown on www.rust-bullet.com/corrosion-rust-experiment/nts/ASTM_B117.htm
Hammerite comes out very badly in these tests. Hope this helps.

where can you get Por 15 from? www.holden.co.uk & www.frost.co.uk (frost is down at the momemt), anywhere else?
How is it applied to a car with a bit of rust already? The brushed to base metal and painted on or slapped on the top? Is it easy enough to put on?

I've used POr-15 in hte past and it is very good apart from two considerations:
the surface must have a good key (rusty is good as long as you remove the loose stuff). If the surface is too smooth it won't key properly and it will peel off. For smooth surfaces use metalready prep
It is sensitive to UV so overcoat with something else if using on Caterfield...
It goes a very long way as it's very thin, a quart would easily do a 7 chassis...
