Evening all,

Thinking that an E90 330d M sport touring manual will be my next car, in a month or so.

Had a B5 RS4 for 4 years but just in the process of turning it into a conservatory :-(
The S3 I've got now is too small, but it uses less fuel than the RS4 did.

So, maybe a 330d will give me some of the attributes of both.

But, where is the best place to find one?
Have been looking at Autotrader, here on Pistonheads and ebay.

Should I be looking anywhere else?

Also, have never had a ride in one - I don't suppose there's someone near Southampton who could take out for a blast?

Cheers

Duncan

That strikes me as expensive anyway for a pre LCI E90.

I'm not really interested in paying extra for a main dealer car - would be quite happy with a 100k-125k miles car with good history.

I guess what I'm asking is are there any good owners forms where I might find an enthusiast maintained car.
Audisrs.com was great for my RS for example

I wouldn't have a clue, cheapest AUC is £15,995 for an auto.

Have you driven a 330d? In a "head rules heart" moment I bought this high-spec E91 330d MSport Touring in early 2011. It was the improved LCI version and fitted with the manual gearbox, so as good as an E91 330d gets.

I sold it after just 3 months. It was an excellent car on all objective levels but the driving experience was just too dull. Sure it was quick and handled well but it wasn't nearly economical enough to justify the lack of charisma.

Why not get the 335i version instead? It will already provide a big improvement in economy over an RS4 and will be notably cheaper to buy than a 330d as residuals aren't as good, but crucially will be much more pleasurable to drive.

No, I've not driven one - would like to try one before I decide.

You say you sold yours - what did you replace it with?

What real world mpg will a 335i do over mixed driving?
The only first hand data I have is from a bloke who bought my XC70 who had one and said "about 25mpg"
- which is not much better than my RS4.

330d real world fuel consumption?

I will admit to a longer term plan to keep an economical car for 2-3 years and then either buy an Audi B8 S4, remapped and pulley change of course! - or keep it and get a toy car for weekends.

Just looked at your profile and noticed M135i.

In a moment of indecision also thought about a 130i - but I can't fit all of my survey gear in the boot.
I could use my wife's XC90 if I need to take all my gear on a job - but don't really fancy it for a day trip to Plymouth for example.

Otherwise a 330i. I think they are less juicy than 335is, but like all petrols it depends how you drive.

As I recall, my 330d did low 30s in mixed driving, rising to 44-45ish on a motorway run.

The M135i does 28 in mixed driving and I've seen 38 on a motorway run.

All I am suggesting is to try both the petrol and diesel before you buy.

That's quite encouraging for the 135i, I guess a 335i should be similar - a couple of MPG worse because of the weight.

You are right - I do need to try some.

Why would you want a large capacity diesel with a manual gearbox? Surely if you prefer a drivers car then petrol the way to go?

Manual diesel, about as ste as it gets for driving enjoyment!!

Wow!! really enjoy those 2000rpms you have to play with!! rolleyes

335i I had used to do 26 round town and 32 on a fast run, 90mph, sit at 75 and you could see 36mpg.

The 330d was about 3mpg better round town and maybe 6 or 7mpg better on a steady run at 75mph.

My choice would be the later 270bhp 330i though, that is a proper car that needs to be worked a bit, more relaxed and luxurious when taking it easy and more fun when pressing on.

Hmm - that's really encouraging for the 335!

Being a newbie to BMW - what year would "later" be?

Not sure when the later 330i is, but it is 272bhp.
I think it was from Sept 2008, but double check it is the 272 engine.

I still prefer the earlier 330i over the 335i, but the later one is amazing mpg wise. I had one for 2 days and did 498 miles on one tank and the obc was showing 38mpg.

58-plate onwards is "late" usually. The LCI cars (which in the 330d and 330i got new improved engines) can be most easily distinguished by the different style of rear lights.

Late (LCI) version:

Earlier (non-LCI) version:

Thanks.

How did you find the manual box on the 330d?

I wasn't a fan of the manual box in the 330D, so went for the auto which I find suits the engine perfectly. It's a nice car, but not sporty so I find the auto helps you drive in the style with which it was designed. I'd definitely consider the 330i with a manual though.

So, did you own 330d manual - or try one before you bought the auto?
