Hi there,
I have a 55 plate astra, 1.7cdti with just over 80k on the clock. Ive had the car nearly a year now without any problems until this morning. I went to start the car and it cranked maybe for half a second, stopped and then cranked again for half a second and so on. This is all with the key fully turned. Dont think the battery is flat as all the electronics work when the ignition on. Just wondering if anyone had any idea what the problem was, or theyve had the same problem.

Are any of the warning lights flashing? If I remember correctly an immobiliser fault is indicated with one flashing.

Sounds like an immobiliser.

Also check fuses.

Immobiliser fault, need to get it onto a Tech2 / equivalent I think. Google "astra h immobiliser" and I'm sure you'll find something on AON/AOC about this fault.

If you have a spare key, try it.

Is a Tech2 a diagnostic box?

Just because the dash lights turn on doesn't necessarily mean there is enough juice to turn the engine over. Got any jump leads?

Put the headlights on. That will tell you.

There definatly is power as the wipers, heater, lights, radio all could be turned on this morning at the same time

Yes.

Actually - just thought.

Put the key into the ignition but don't turn it at all
Hold down the accelerator and brake pedals, straight to the floor
Turn the key until all of the dash lights come on - DO NOT START THE ENGINE

Where the mileage display is, it should now say ECN xxxxxx - the numbers are a fault code if it shows something other than 000000.

Alternator is a common problem on these as well, just a thought.

yes - you can pretty much just Google "astra" + the code and find stuff about it smile

The starter wants around 200 amps to spin the motor over whereas the wipers etc only need 20 to 30 hence why they work but the starter doesn't. Try jump starting it first with some decent leads.

Hi I'm on a friends account; we've just done the pedal check and the following codes popped up:
007071
050074
065074
161450
161600

More than likely be the 'fuel pump ecu', the AA do loads every week on the 1.7 diesel , which is actually an isuzu engine really. Loads of recon ones on eBay. It's bolted on the back of the engine block as you look at the engine, I think it can be changed from the top on Astras, more room than corsa's.

007071 Ambient Air Temperature Sensor Circuit
050074 Vehicle Speed Signal Range/Performance

161450 Immobiliser Wrong Signal Received Immobiliser
161600 CIM (Steering Column Module) Wrong Environment Identifier Immobiliser

I'd say ignore the first 2 as the engine isnt running - looks like your immobiliser is fecked.

ETA I know nothing about astras but that looks like the key isnt communicating with the immobiliser. Do you have a spare key you can try ?

ETA2: For future reference, the code is the first 4 digits e.g. 007071 = 0070 - then a quick google will give you the answer

ETA3: I know nothing about astras and got the above from an Astra owners forum after a quick google so dont take it as gospel. Suggest you find a forum, join and post the codes
