Drove through red 'X' on Mo-Way.. Yes I really didn't know..

Mates
After a midnight call on Friday that our London office had had a break in, it appeared I was the only sober/available/mug keyholder, so had to attend, despite living in Dorset.
Long story cut to menial proportions, I was 'making progress' in lane 2, and came upon road works on the M25. See gantry signs, and convenient BIB waiting on hard shoulder.
A couple of miles on came the tug, BiB said straight away licence, made some notes, then patronised me somewhat, then explained that I had committed an endorsable offence, and would be reported. Whatever, it was a fair cop.
I await the flaming etc, and offer no excuse whatsoever, I didn't know that it was an offence to continue in a motorway lane, past such a sign. Perhaps I shouldn't be allowed to have a licence.
A quick google reveals that is indeed the case, and even shows up past threads here. The posting is purely to inform or remind any other mutually ill informed PH'ers that it is indeed an endorsable offence, and a silly way of accruing points. It seems the offence is treated as driving through a red traffic light. It even said that on the ticket.... I'm sure however if I'd stopped dead in lane two, some other offence would have been being committed.
Minor ray of hope; as I currently (didn't) have any points, the BiB begrudgingly explained that I may be selected for a driver re-education course rather than points.

How many gantries with the red xxx's did you pass? I take it the M25 was completely closed and you would have had to come off at the A3 anyway, so why in lane 2?
Did you not tell them you were on your way to break-in, you might have got an escort!
Those are pretty clear pics from your camera, can I ask what system it is?

How did they get past you in lane 2
Can't believe that you didn't know that rule, unless you passed your test in 1960 and haven't looked at the Highway Code since.
Yes, you broke the law, but not in the same league as crossing a red traffic light IMO. Should have just given you a rollicking.

It's always a dodgy one, and I believe the Police go for the "spirit" rather than the actual law.
I've had cars refuse point blank to let you in, you just have to wait until someone will, but of course without stopping, as that'd be really dangerous if the lane next to you is still moving.
I'm struggling to believe you didn't know what the red "X" meant, and it is a shame you have to be reported, rather than just bked.

I have never wanted a dashcam before (in fact I thought you'd have to be a weirdo to use one) but that quality is great! I want it, what is it and how much does it cost?
Seeing as the overhead gantries are inaccurate 95% of the time I'd get on with my business before pulling in as well OP, you have my sympathy - lazy, target driven policing.
