I am afraid you are going to need more than a tap and die. If the thread has stripped in the sump you will need an oversize sump plug and a tap to match. I seem to recall that the oversize plug that is usualy used on the AJP is from some flavor of Renault but I would speak to an engine builder to be sure what works best.

Tapping new thread into the sump will leave small chips of metal inside the sump. As it is aluminium this may or may not worry you. To remove the sump to do it properly is an engine out job.

Presumably you have drained the oil. If you still have it I would think once you re-tap and put the new plug in if you pour some of the old oil back in and re-drain it would flush out any small bits of metal you couldn't get out with a strong magnet. My sump plug has a long magnetic bar on the back too - it might be worth getting one of those if possible.

It is an engine out job to get the sump off as I found out with my last Cerbera.

Did this job a couple of months back

16mm drill

M18 x1.5 tap
M18 x 1.5 magnetic sump plug

Engine in situ no problem,
Used a big sleeve over the tap to make sure it was square. Engine sump is made of cheese! Tapping was easy. Used a stick with cloth wrapped round coated in grease to collect the swarf.

Don't tighten the new plug up too much and a bit of rtv helps lock it.

If the sump threads are prone to stripping I'd look at helicoiling it.

Use plenty grease, and it should catch the swarf in the tap.
