I ran out last night of de-icer. To be fair I've had it 2 years now.
I've been using Prestone which so far has always melted the ice of instantly. To me it's the best I've used but the only others I've used are own brand (tesco and the like) which were crap
Has anyone else come across a good brand before I go buy some more?

You should get a scraper - much better than any spray

Kettle of hot water, wipe the screen instantly, done. Takes seconds. I'm sure someone will be along shortly to say it will crack the windscreen. I've done it for 20 years with no problem.
Watering cans of warm/hot water have worked for me for 10 years, de-icer has its applications (locks for example) but I wouldn't waste my money using it for windows etc. Scraping also works but warm/hot water is much quicker (I wouldn't do it if you have a pre-existing chip though just to be safe).

I use one of these for my front windscreen http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Anti-Frost-Winter-Sun-Bl...

The same as in the picture I just trap it in both the driver and passenger door. Saves any hassle of scarping or de-icing, for the front windscreen at least.

Hot water has worked fine for me too for 6 years, doesn't need to be from the kettle.

I've been looking at these and similar. Do they work with frameless doors? Or has anyone any recommendations for the magnetic ones?

Another advocate of the warm water method here. You can release frozen doors with warm water too, which you can't do with an ice scraper. Just be ready to jump in the car and go as soon as you're done. Yesterday i stupidly came over all generous and de-iced the Missus' car after mine. By the time I'd finished my doors had frozen shut again.

The warm water trick does work reasonably well but find it a bit of a mare if you're not fast enough it freezes over immediately... or if you hastily open the door to switch on the wiper, find you get covered in water as the wipers spring to life.

Just scraping the ice with a decent scraper with gloves on is my preferred option!

Scrapers here, too. Most of the time it's relatively painless, sometimes you get that nasty sheet ice which is very hard to scrape at which point I might resort to liquid de-icer.

An extension lead and a fan heater

Get up and shove fan heater in the car and let it run for the 30 minutes it takes for morning routines

and your car is nice and defrosted

For the ultimate lazy put it in the night before with a time switch
