Bonnet strut fixings.
Discussion
Hi Peeps…I bought some replacement bonnet struts and went to fit them yesterday..I noticed that the O/S fixing that is in the body work was out of line and on closer inspection i noticed it was starting to tear out of its seating, There is a crack in the fibreglass around the nut…Its not loose so i have left it alone for now..The struts will be used for the boot instead but this looks like a difficult job, Any advice please…Cheers…Ziga
I changed all four on a previous Wedge I had and though some of those body bolts can be a bit dodgy, I haven't had one come right off. However, like Adam says if it does you'll just have to epoxy it back on. The struts I bought were the Range Rover rear hatch ones and though they were a bit stiff, they did the job well. All four are the same size. Just one tip. If you have trouble pressing them together while putting them in place, use a leather belt fed through its buckle to squeeze them together, then offer it to the mounting points on the car, releasing the belt slowly to the desired length. I hope that makes sense, because the ones I had were pretty tough. Now you know why the bolts tend to move out the body. All the best.

The original struts were only rated for 100N (Newtons) force; although there are plenty of cars that have struts the same length they are usually rated way higher than this. Many years back when I had my Tasmin I was told by an authority
that they were ex-Range Rover tailgate glass, which would seem to make sense... but having spunked my wad on 4 of them they turned out to be something like 240N.
I've heard people claim they fit OK (which they do) and apart from the odd creak when closing bonnet or boot no harm was done, well I think Zig has proven otherwise.
You can buy adjustable struts that come pre-filled to 200N+ that you can bleed down to something near but it's trial and error with no way to pump them back up if you get it wrong.
Mark I still have the four ex-Rangey ones, they could get a Caterpillar D9 out of bed

If you have the originals check the painted-on label - it should have the strength which I recall being in the the 50 Newtons range (or maybe 100 as Weg1e says). Also if you have a 3rd brake light or a under-bonnet light you need Stabilus Elektrolifts which are still listed in the their catalog but not available as best we were able determine. That said, our local suppliers - had to try a couple - had universal replacements at the correct length and strength. If they are too stiff they will tear up the the fiberglass on one end or the other or both ends. I think there is an older thread on here about this. Grady
Cheers guys..I really should of check on the original…(I should know better)..I ordered a pair from SGS but they were too long so i have used them in the boot but i was hoping that when i pushed the button the boot would lift on its own..No such luck..I might get a couple of capri tailgate ones for the boot as the ones i got for Delilah could fire a pie off the back….Cheers…Ziga
