Hi all, I'm new to Porsche's, can someone explain a bit more about the Metzger engine. I have a 997 turbo gen 1 and I believe it has the above engine.
If I'm correct the 996 turbo has basically the same engine so that's a mezger engine. So is the 997 gen 2 turbo a mezger and what about 997 gen 1 c2s etc?
What's the fuss about?

As far as the 996/997s go, the GT* series and Turbos only had the Mezgers. I think I read somewhere on here that the 997.2 may not have had this engine. No doubt someone will fill in.

The engine block casting is marked with "964 -" - at least on 996 Turbos.

As far as fuss goes, this is mainly only because the non-Mezgers don't have such a hot rep.

The 996 and 997 turbo, GT2 and GT3's all had the Mezger engine

The Mezger continued in the GT3 series through the life of the 997, its last road car appearance being in the GT3 RS 4.0 when it was finally retired.

The 997.2 Turbo didn't.

Thats right, sorry. The 997.2 Turbo used a different engine but the GT3's and GT2's all used the Mezger.

The mezger engine you are referring to, was based on the GT1 engine from the 1998 Le Mans winning car. Itself, a development of the 964 engine and all of the previous 911 engines. It is up there with the most of the successful racing engines ever built, maybe even the Cosworth DFV.

Of course Hans Mezger designed many more amazing racing engines and is an important part of porsche history as Ferdinand himself!

His engines were reliable, very strong and could be tuned to a very high state.

They didnt sound half bad either!

But that flat 16 only really drove once is it was just too scary. They stuck with with the flat 12, but even that must have been pretty scary turbo charged up at 1100+ bhp in the open 917/30 can-am car.

I don't think Mr Mezger had much, if anything, to do with the GT1 engine. He doesn't mention it in his book and had retired years before. The 3.2 turbocharged GT1 engine is, however, an evolution of his 956/962 engine design - itself an evolution of an earlier design.

A 'Mezger engine' is one that wasn't necessarily designed by Hans Mezger (e.g. 996 GT3, 996 turbo) but is based on one of his earlier designs.

Correct. The term Mezger, when applied to the modern GTx cars, refers to the heart of the engine, the block and associated fundamental design or basic architecture.
