I have been driving now for nearly 3 months and last night i accidently drove on the wrong side of the road for about 5 seconds.

i got lost trying to get out of Birmingham city centre at midnight, it was dark and the rain was quite heavy. The roads in Birmingham are a nightmare and so misleading.my sat nav(google maps, will never use this app again)told me to take a slight right turn and it sent me down the wrong side of the road past a set of traffic lights, luckily there were no cars and i was able to turn into a side road a few seconds later. few minutes later i came back on this road(the right way).

i fully admit to being irresponsible and could have caused an accident. in hindsight, if i was unsure where i was going i could have stopped and considered my options but i didn't because i'm an idiot. ha

At this time there were no police around and didn't see any camera flashes but i know there is more than likely to be CCTV cameras around who will track me down. i am now worried that because of an honest mistake i could get prosecuted & incur a hefty fine which more than likely i won't be able to afford.

how long would i have to wait to receive a letter requesting me to attend court or pay a fine with points on my licence??

In normal course of events it is not in itself unlawful to drive on the 'wrong' side of the road.

You have nothing to fear.

For a boat load of reasons bud, you have nothing to worry about.

New drivers make mistakes like this all the time. Even if there was a cop who saw you, he may have pulled you over but simply to educate you, not to scare/prosecute you. Even if you had caused a collision, it still wouldn't have been a police matter, instead it would just be up to the insurance companies to sort out.

Don't worry about the CCTV, spotting driving errors aren't what they're their for. Lets just say someone did see it and tried to report you for it, without a road-side stop, how is anyone going to know who was driving the car, therefor how do they know who to summon to court?

Learn form your mstake bud and accept the fact that there are plenty more to come wink

What the others said - you're fine. Also, your sat-nav didn't send you anywhere - it's important to remember that you should consider each direction it gives you before you choose whether or not to follow it.

Easy mistake to make though and I bet you won't make it again smile

And you've also learned that Sat Nav instructions can't always be blindly trusted and followed (it could have been worse, you might have driven over a cliff or down a narrow road and got wedged between two buildings hehe - it happens!).

And fair play on reflecting on what you did and admitting to yourself (and on here) you didn't get it right on that occasion thumbup .

thanks for the assurances. i remember my driving instructor telling me that if i turned into a one way sreet or wrong side of the road at traffic junctions, its deemed an offence. he's also a retired policeman. he'll probably laugh at me when i tell him this in the pub and then push me into doing a pass plus in BIRMINGHAM! just to wind me up.

anyone had issues with google maps, like if you go the wrong way or miss a turning it takes ages for it to reroute? I'm heavily reliant on my satnav when it comes to driving in Birmingham, even if there are signs, the roads are still confusing along with other idiot drivers just like me on the road haha. the only good thing about driving in birmingham city is when you've found the road to get the hell out of it.

Just for clarity, were you driving on the wrong side of the road, or driving the wrong way on a one way street ?

So: its a licence for councils to shore-up their shrinking rate support grants then?

clarify: wrong side of the road.

some of the roads in Birmingham city are badly lit, not good when weather conditions are poor/low visibility. the road system in Birmingham city has been criticised for years, worse than the spaghetti junction. Especially round by moor street, five ways island and st chads road, near paradise circus. I've seen cars cut across lanes & cause accidents. the road markings on the road can't be seen at night clearly. if you're unfamiliar with the roads like i am, it's a new driver's nemesis.

Birmingham City Council are quite Beaurocratic, so i guess i'll just have to wait and see.

I was behind a car in Coventry today that decided to drive on the wrong side of the road for no reason at all.

It must be the air in Coventry. smile

If you ever go to The Savoy, remember that the road leading up to it has a special rule: you must drive on the right!

It does happen...

A505 dual carriageway, so 70+ mph.
I do don't know how this silly bint didn't cause a massive pile up!

(Click on thumb for bigger image.)

This was the rear view camera (I knew that Xtreme Titan (amber) LED kit would come in handy one day!)
Nice controlled stop, apart from that prat in the white BMW who only realised something was up as he got to the car coming towards him!

I did the same in the Digbeth area of Birmingham a few years ago shortly after passing my test. Sat nav said turn right, ended up driving up a filter lane for the opposite side of the road to turn right... luckily it was quiet so just turned around and turned left instead!
