Battery in the boot .. Experiences ?
Discussion
Soon I'm going to have my Chim 450 retrimmed in leather and thinking , if I'm going to move the battery now would be a good time to do it.
X-Works do a modification to sit the battery in the middle of the boot on top of the tank , which looks pretty good once it's been trimmed up. Since I've got a facelift II high lift boot , it would be even better access than a std Chim. It doesn't appear to affect the useable boot space or the positioning of the roof in the boot.
My reasons for moving it:-
i) Easier access to the battery
ii)More passenger leg room.
What are peoples experience of moving the battery ??? Good or Bad idea ??? Benfits/Disadvantages ??? Thanks

This was mine, that's a full size battery under the box on the left hand side. The fuel tank cover was a mess when I bought it so while I was making a new one it seemed a good idea to move the battery and make one for that.
Spare used to sit over on the right but had to re-locate to centre to fit roof panel in. A new longer live cable was fitted and the earth taken through the boot and attached to the chassis (don't recall exactly where). Access to battery was obviously far better and I just like doing "little projects" like that

The live cable goes through the bulkhead , over the gearbox and i used some of the that insulated sleeve.
Then beefed the ground up from the starter to the chassis.
Mine was made with 6mm MDF covered in thin carpet/felt, readily available on Ebay (it's the sort of stuff giant speaker box's in Vauxhall Corsa's are covered in
)Here's some...... clicky
Daz's looks like a Tesco "boot tidy bag"?

Does the roof have to go in at an angle now, rather than hug the tank ?
Sold the car a couple of years ago so really don't remember, but quite possibly? Still left plenty of boot space and wasn't a problem to me as I don't play golf. Edited by phillpot on Saturday 30th November 10:15
I have done this but ran the cables from the existing position into the tunnel under the passenger door and out behind the passenger door. From there it pops over the wheel arch into the left side of the boot.
No cutting of fibreglass and uses existing channels.
Note on all pictures the increased guage of cable to reduce resistance along the increased length.

it is stainless -only- with neopren isolation..... and with lower bracket and A4-80 bolts.

Therefore that the cable will to be longer it is better to change the diammeter of it
from begin (starter) to end (battery) up to 50mm² (35mm² it´s standard) by reason of
the voltage.
In this case the cable is nicer to lay by the lower side of the interior....

exchange 50mm² to 35mm² ....it will be ~ 4,5 mtr.

Thinking of moving the battery to the boot and just wondered if it is necessary to put something in to support the cover/ flap in the footwell after the battery is gone?
You can cut it down so it fits just in front of the fuse box ,you can even secure the ECU , Your carpet will be a bit short but you can sort that out any time .You will have more room for leggy blondes so that is one of the advantages.

ationGregor, love the fuse box, proper job mate

Had a look at your website, see you're based in Germany... just thought I'd mention though that Restauration is spelt Restoration if it's in English
I can't speak German so it's a bit rude, sorry, but thought I'd mention it
Love some of the other stuff you've posted so please don't take offence.....Taking the battery, fuse box, and ECU out of the footwell just seems right, it really is a crap place for them in my opinion. Goaty won't agree coz it wouldn't be original if you moved it all...
Why on earth did they put all the electrickery in the footwell??? Must have been cost I'd guess...
I'd also guess that 99.99% of TVR breakdowns are electrical. Shirly, in 2013, with a few bob well spent, these problems could be almost completely eliminated... with such a simple (mechanical) piece of machinery, and with the electricals fixed, it would be one of the most reliable vehicles on the road today....
This may help you ,my next job is fuse box behind the seat then new carpet .
