I've been doing some agency work lately and before I throw myself into committing to any big jobs I just want to see if I am getting mugged off or am getting a fair wage.

Any and all input much appreciated.

Comparisons will possibly not be very helpful; you need to compare like with like so we would need to know: region; routes; loads; nights out of bed; any benefits etc. best rule is to ask what you think you're worth doing that role. Good luck!

Put it over in the commercials thread you ll get some input there.

But its about right from what ive heard speaking to people.

Im on £8.50 but do about 60 hours a week and 2 nights out, and get £24 for them and all parking paid with meal vouchers included.

£9 an hour is the lowest I have seen jobs advertised for class 2 drivers. Any less is really lame.

Wowsers thats not far off minimum wage. I imagine they are struggling to find drivers paying those sorts of wages considering all the cpc training and digitachos and risking your licence every day.

Down here near London most class 2 jobs are between £9 - £12 an hour.

There is a bloke from Newcastle way on another forum I frequent. Hes on minimum wage and does national work away all week.

Been looking he says but even if he got a better rate he d be worse off due to losing his night out money.

Hes saving for class 1 and he ll be gone then.

Jobs on its arse.

I put my foot in it the other day. We were talking about retirement and I proposed working 2-3 days a week doing something I love when if it was minimum wage or less. Guy beside me is a driver and said sure that's what I'm on now.

The haulage business really is on it's knees frown

The rates vary a lot depending on where in the country the job is based. As a general rule the top money is to be found on the M1-M25-M4 corridors between Daventry and Reading because of the huge amount of RDCs and other transport firms in that area = strong demand for drivers. Once you get off the beaten track into ruralshire then rates not much above the NMW are pretty common, even for class 1.

Again, as a general rule, £8/hr for class 2 agency day work (+ time 1.5 after 8hrs) is about right for most populated areas - certainly about right here in W Yorks anyway. If you're out in the sticks and getting that then you're doing well.

I've just been routinely bent over and bummed dry of late.

Got made redundant from work on the ships and don't fancy finding another job in that sector. Had enough of being at sea plus now all my courses are out of date.

Had my HGV class 2 and ADR from way back so giving it a pop and I remember being told years ago its good cash......not now or on agency gig.

Also got my sia licence for some reason but don't fancy doing door work though I might as the HGV is hassle for not enough money.

I'm on £8.49 a hour doing home shopping at Tesco, to me £8 a hour for Class 2 doesn't seem brilliant!

If it's the one in Ayrshire then you'll be on £6.31/hr. Virtually no HGV driver work in that part of the world. In fact at this time of the year I think you'll do well to get any driving work at all in that area.

If you want to drive and don't mind people, the big bus companies will pay 8-10ph depending whereabouts you are. Bear in mind if you go through their training school you're usually locked in to work for them for 2 years, mind...

I'm essex based, and the firm I do work for when the tours are quiet are deemed good payers.
£8.80 flat for a 10 hour day, time and half after that.
saturdays time and half, sundays £15.
On a flat out week, 15 hours every day, and 4 or 5 nights out you can clear 600-650

sounds ok, but when you think thats approx a 70 hour week, pfffft, so for people that work in the real world of 35-40 hours a week it probably equates to about 300-350 a week.

the tours are much better in every way, barring the time away. Everything st a price eh rolleyes
