right so as the subject pretty much says it all i will add a bit more info.

just passed my test not even a month ago and i have around 1500 for a car. Ive been looking at Corsa Cs and fiestas simply because the insurance ive been quoted on them (1.2 - 1.4) is around the 1000 mark. After looking at a lot of corsas recently (1.2 16v 02-03 models mostly) ive been hearing alot of people saying dont get them.

Can anyone advise me on a good first car as i dont want to be regretting my decision after i have bought the thing lol

any advice would be very helpful, thanks

When looking for a cheap reliable runabout, my mechanic mate recommended a Toyota yaris. He says they're just put together better than all the clio's, corsa's and fiestas out there.

I would always say go for something unusual in the hope the insurance will be reasonable...

This or a honda Jizz if you don't mind the image.

If you want some fun the Fiesta is better than a corsa although you'll be on the verge of the model changeover in 2002 the older shape has some rust issues

For a modern purchase I'd be going for a mini one or fiat cinquecento sporting. Before going in this direction id be raking through ebay classics for something interesting.

A friend of mine bought one of these for £1500. It hasn't skipped a beat in two years. I test drove it for him and apart from being a little underpowered, it wad fine smile

Nothing wrong with the Corsa C. It's a decent little car, and your insurance quote sounds very, very reasonable for a new driver.

From personal experience, insurance was cheaper on unusual cars (ones that youngsters didn't tend to drive/ crash often). For example, I had a Ford Focus saloon, as the insurance was half the price that I was quoted for an identical spec/age/mileage Focus hatchback. Incidentally, a Ford Focus 1.4 would be a good first car smile

I'm not a fan of the 1.2 petrol engine used in the Corsa and they seem to suffer timing chain issues often running very loudly. The 2002 onwards Fiesta is probably a good shout with the 1.25 engine if you can find one in budget.

Corsa 'C' is a bad car in my opinion. The opinions of others may differ.

Rust! And check the wishbones and general front suspension.

Have you considered a Rover 25?! Good to drive and ridiculously cheap to buy.

Im 24 tho. 25 in less than a year so that might have a big part to play in it. Also its going to be getting kept in my drive so that might have bumped It down a little. Ive actually found that sometimes im £80/£90 cheaper on comprehensive insurance then 3rd party, fire and theft which I wasnt expecting :s.

I habe looked at rovers also but i really hate the look of them so even tho its cheap as chips i want something im going to enjoy driving smile

Corsa C would make a great first car at that kind of budget.

They are perfectly acceptable to drive. You should be looking for the twinport model which I think is anything newer than a 54plate IIRC.

Timing chain's are noisy if not done and you will certainly know about it and if they let go it will damage engine in a big way. Try to find one that's been relatively well looked after with some form of history, but if it hasn't got any service it yourself. Buy one with 12month MOT.

I sell a lot of these as 1st cars for people, and think they are good value for money.

If the chain, headgasket or something fails plenty of parts knocking around at breakers and they are not that hard to source/fix. Nice and cheap for tyres brake pads etc aswell.

SXI models in black are the easiest to sell. The design is probably cheaper to pick up, basically the same car only has black dials and is colour coded rubstrips with marginally different seats.

I have an 05 twinport 3dr sxi black on 89,000 miles which I could probably retail for about £1500/£1600 the first week of January. Definetely go for one of these facelift cars.

Not the most exciting or PH of cars but I know a fair bit about them and have probably sold 30 this year.

Funnily enough its a twinport 3dr sxi ive mainly been looking for past week or so. Defo thought parts wouldnt be to difficult to pick up at breakers but since im not exactly the most intelligent lad when it comes to engine problems I thought I better ask advice on this kinda thing before I "splash the cash"

In our experience (3 cheap to insure cars purchased so far) - the 02 plate KA was awful (suspension bushes knocking, spark plugs rusted in, steering play, brakes poor) so we didn't keep it long. Then a 54 plate Carsa 1.2 SXI which has been OK apart from a camshaft snapping (a known fault which we were compensated for). The oldest we have bought is an 02 plate Yaris and it has been brilliant - it wasn't the tidiest but it just goes and goes, highish mileage on it but doesn't seem to matter - still drives almost as new! Of the 3 it has easily been the best to own.

Corsa C is a great little car. For it's purpose (no frills motoring), it does it very well.

VW Lupo/Seat Arosa, or VW Polo/Seat Ibiza is also worth a look.

Just one tip, look after the car and the car will look after you. smile
