Afternoon all,

Over the Christmas period a ran down a pheasant which cracked my bumper annoyingly.

I don't really want to spend a grand plus on a new VXR bumper, so a repair is needed.

I've taken it to a couple of places and they seem really reluctant to repair it, I'm taking it to BMW/Merc registered places too.

I was just surprised. Have you chaps had any good experiences with anywhere around the Midland area?

Thanks
Keelan

The problem is that car places don't like messing about with ABS plastics (which most cars now use), when bumper covers for most cars are relatively cheap.

You could try and find a bike fairing repairer via a local motorbike shop. Fairings have often cost about 20% of the value of a 2 year old bike, so repairs have been a necessity for at least the last 20 years. They usually grind out the break and then plasticweld the two sides back together.

Ed China repaired a split bumper on a BMW 840 Coupe on Wheeler Dealers last night.

He removed all the paint from the damaged area, drilled holes all along the split either side, used a dremel to create a v groove along the split then used a special plastic resin that was applied with a gauze backing on the inside of the bumper.

The resin seeped through the holes and he placed a plastic strip over the holes on the outside and used a scraper to level out the resin.

After 45 minutes to cure, removed the plastic and then rubbed down ready for painting. Looked quite easy but didn't catch the name of the product - the resin was black.

I am about to embark on a repair for mine. The resin fix sounds interesting, I might go countersunk rivets with backing plate and filler. I'll post it up once I've had a go rotate

The vxr Monaro bumpers are a nightmare to repair and to stop cracking , hence why I had some fibreglass ones made

I had my VXR bumper crack repaired when I had it resprayed.
The body shop didn't seem to have any problem with it and you can't see where the repair was at all so it can be done and well.

Same, had mine repaired in August 12 although an oversized speed bump opened up the crack again a few months back. Heard the underside scrape and knew what was coming frown My local garage repaired it the first time no problems and will get my business again soon. Hope you find someone to take it on OP.

One thing worth noting is that the bumper adhesive recommended by GM for the Monaro bumper (to stick the parking sensor brackets to a new bumper, but should be OK to use in repair of splits) is GM9982247 it is a Lord Fusor product 142/143.

Same here, bodyshop didn't have any issues when a crack in mine as repaired. You could never tell it was one, and after several years and knocks later the only signs now are a hairline mark in the paint which is appearing.

That was Ric Wood Motorsport in Stockport for reference.

I've used GM Bodycraft in MK twice for repair and respray.

Second time was a real mission as it was a bad split, but it looks great now, good strong paint too

Take it for plastic welding. Easily repaired by welding and filling. It's a 10 minute job. Then re-paint the repair / bumper.

Don't know what part of the country you are in but local body shop here in N Wales repaired a crack in my Monaro front bumper 4 years ago. It was an excellent repair and still looks perfect now. Cost at the time was £150.
