Just thought I'd put something positive on here for a change.

My enjoyment of the car was starting to wane a bit, and paranoia set, in after all the stories of engine failure here on PH.
Happily though I've just had a cracking drive on the twisty bits and remembered what a great car it is, helped certainly by some fettling yesterday by those very nice people at Nine Excellence and Ken's advice to just enjoy it and stop worrying.

Of course now I've tempted fate I'll be expecting trouble with my RBS, shafting of my bores and scoring of my intermediate whatsernames!

Lovely - yes just had a great drive in mine today as well - aided by brand new MSS rubber - they are such awesome cars to drive!!

That's brilliant news and a great blog.
Looks pretty much identical to mine- perhaps the black 2002s were the best!

You're only ever minutes away from a 10 grand rebuild in those 996's, run like the wind!

Yeah thanks TX. Exactly the kind of negativity I was trying to counter. All cars can go bang.

To add to the positivity here - there are so many different flavours of 911 over the last 50 years but there is simply not one of them that I wouldn't like to own and drive.

I know that there is fierce debate over what is better and what drives better - but if you took out any 911 on a nice road in the dry on a decent sunny morning I guarantee you every single one would put a smile on your face and isn't that what its all about at the end of the day?

They are all that good - and one of the main reasons why Porsche exists as it does today.

I've got a black '03 with over 100k on it, all original, that hasn't blown up yet either.

Has anyone ever done a study or poll into the amount of cars with engine failures that included colour..???? wink

Don't think so but it's well known the black ones are faster!

I cerainly think that they look best in black, and I am not a fan of black.

The standard 996 body is less curvy than the previous cars and especially along its flanks is quite flat. No hips.

Black helps accentuate the subtle curves due to its reflective nature.

My 996 3.6 c2 is also black and is about to reach 100k miles with no mechanical rebuilds.

Mine back in 2010.

Sold it when the warranty ran out on the replacement engine that cost me ten grand... As you can see, an abused and neglected example!

Fair play lovely little read and cheaper than buying a new run of the mill car.
Be good for another 100k that.

Irony was that I had asked OPC if at 6 years old it was time for a warranty. They walked me over to an approved used car they were selling - similar to mine but with 95k miles! Mine was at 38k or so. Told me they were bulletproof and not to waste my money! Oh how times change...

It seems like most of the horror stories have happened at relatively low mileage. My indy feels that most of the failures have already happened hopefully, so those of us with slightly more leggy cars (mine has done 72k) can maybe relax a bit??
So let's hear from some more high mileage owners to cheer ourselves up.

My black 3.4 C2's going great at 109k, looked after by Sports & Classic for about 6-7 years.

It did need the IMS bearing replacing at 85-90k though - luckily was caught when it was noisy (could only be heard from underneath when running on a ramp, hence most never get noticed before it's too late).
