having had a creaking / knocking noise now from o/s front for a while now thought i better sort it was told it would probably be front top mount but check large 22mm strut nut and the 3 13mm mount nuts first for tightness all ok car was retested last week so had a good look at other possible causes worn bushes etc these are all fine no excess play. back to top mounts stripped down today removed top mount o/s now the bearing in the housing does not seem to have any play in it feels tight but would things be diffrent when weight of car is on it and its loading up ?

I had a knocking noise at low speed over undulations. The dealer changed the top mounts under warranty and I did the front shockers at the same time. It is now better but not silent. My top mounts didn't appear to have any play in them out of the car. What makes you think it is the top mounts?

Well the things that you would expect to be worn out are ok the top mounts are like new and the drop links are also fine tight with no play so what to look at next ? There's talk about the front shocks making this noise others say front anti roll bars. The noise on my car is more of a creak than a knock I would say so I would probably eliminate anti roll bar bushes as they give a definite knock if worn allthough like said a lot of cars do this I would like to cure it but putting parts like front shock(s) on with no guarantee of a 100 percent fix is not the cheapest of pastimes

My 997 GT2 had this creaking for ages, OPC replaced the top mount and a few bushes but it didn't solve it, the damper was eventually replaced which completely sorted it.

To check if the damper rod nut and the bearing nuts are done up fully the car should not be jacked up.

Did you ever solve the knocking noise? My 2007 25k mile 997.1 GT3 has exactly the same symptom.
OPC Looking at it next week, starting with a road test. Sounds like top mounts might be covered by warranty so might be able to wangle getting these replaced. As many people who have suggested top mounts have suggested dampers or coffin arms! Someone must know the cause!
Thanks.

5k sus refresh :-) cars 11 years old, just change every thing you will thank me.
top mounts, drop links, LCA and shock rebuild.

been saying this about 996 cars for 6 years now sadly the 997 is due for a mini refresh at that age regarding the sus area.

The front top mounts are poor quality components items that that don't actually utilise proper spherical, roller or ball bearings unlike the 996/994/964 RS/GT3 items. Another cost cutting exercise that end up costing owners dearly.

The knocking noise will be one of the following :

Strut top mounts worn/failed (common)
Anti roll bar drop link ball joints worn/failed.
Strut damper rod bearings failed (common) these can be overhauled cheaply by Bilstein UK iirc, or your local OPC will tell you you need two new items at £*00 each ....
Outer coffin arm ball joints dried out and now worn/failed as a result.
Occasionally the caster rod bush in the coffin arms fail, but it's unlikely.
Inner coffin arm bush failed/delaminating.

OPC's are notoriously hopeless at isolating and diagnosing knocks/squeaks on 997 GT3 suspension. IMO you'd be far better taking the car to the likes of Center Gravity, Fearnsport, JZM, Parrs, RPM Technik etc, than having open wallet surgery at your local OPC.

Thanks, Slippy.
I'll take it to a specialist (Parr is closest and have used before) because I doubt any of the components you've listed will be covered by warranty.
It's strange that OPC did the MoT and none of these items is even advisory.

It will be the damper. Well documented issue. Warranty job back in the day.
