Hi Everyone...
I've had ye olde squealing alternator belt (when wet) for a little while now.
This morning I had a permanent battery light on and by the time I got to a roundabout about 3 miles from home, the stereo in the car turned off (serious or what??).

When I got to work and turned off the engine, and tried to restart the car I got nothing no juice basically... After about 4 hours I managed to get the car started and delivered to the garage. (Local garage not a lotus dealer). My nephew runs the service dept there so imagine my surprise when he quoted me £420 (inc vat) to replace the alternator... anyone apart from me think that this is a lot? He said he'd only charge me what it took to do it but the alternator was only charging at 12 (elephants, sausages I don't know)... can anyone with a bit more knowledge shed any light ? From my investigations it looks like a relatively straight forward job...

Just need a second opinion really.

My alternator failed about 6 weeks back on my S2 Elise (non-aircon model so makes it easier to change I'm told). I went to my local Lotus specialist and was charged £360 inc VAT for the new alternator and labour. I had a few quotes before and they varied from what I paid to £600 from a Lotus Main Dealer.

ok well I've managed to get the engine light off... using the turn ignition to acc (2 clicks?) and then press and release the throttle 3 times...seems to have done the trick on that... just the Alternator to sort now.
