George Orwell on sport in general but just as applicable to motorsport,

Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence: in other words it is war minus the shooting.

In a car with one tyre losing pressure and on a track which wasn't even 100% dry . I was there at Copse. "There are only three sports - bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games."

Attributed to Ernest Hemingway (though there are some doubts over if he actually said it) - but regardless I shall be using it over the summer when I achieve pariah status for not bowing down to the great god football.
