IIRC there was a reference to a firm of lawyers that had a TVR connection?
If anyone can give me a steer, then I'd be obliged.

What's happened is that I was 'phoned by Mannings this morning who advised it was time for renewal. However, because of a pending claim, the premium has gone up by £100'sh.

"What claim", I enquired! Turns out my car flicked up a stone on a local road which caused a chip on the bonnet and windscreen of following car. Allegedly, I was driving erratically!! I have no recollection of the incident at all

I was traced by the number plate recognition system....but this morning was the first I knew anything about it! The guys at Mannings think it is a rather petulant (their word) claim. It could happen on any of the UK's current roads, IMHO. I guess I could argue that the other vehicle/claimant was following too close? From what I was told by Dave at Mannings, the whole claim would only amount to £100 - £200. (Probably close to the claimant's excess anyway?)

What do you guys think about this?

I think it's total rot. If that were the case then anyone with a chip/cracked windscreen could take the number of any local car and try to claim the same.
This world is getting it so wrong banghead

Surely they require evidence

Sounds like circumstantial garbage. What if an HGV had passed in the opposite direction flicking stones up but crack only manifested or became evident to the driver when they began to make the false assumption it was the car in front.

What if the crack was present when they set off but naturally assumed when a stone was flicked up on a poor surface that the car In front did it.

Of course you were driving erratically. It's a low sports car and there's fekking pot holes everywhere that you are avoiding.

What if you'd used an ill adjusted windscreen washer jet and it touched their car? Good lord they'd want to replace it

I'd be asking mannings why they aren't 1 million percent contesting it.

It's totally unsubstantiated and unless they were running a video camera that filmed the incident including the impact id tell mannings that if they complete the claim you'll be going to the insurance ombudsman and making a complaint as it's fuelling claim culture.

Note the time you spend on this and follow it up with a claim for compensation to cover the hours you've invested.

in the absence of any corroboration its bolloks

tell your insurer to do their job and tell the claimant to provide substantive evidence or their claim is worthless

Apart from it being a ridiculous claim which should not succeed I'm surprised that a member of 'Joe Public' should be able to make use of the number plate recognition system to get details of your insurers - would they have had to have gone through the police to get those details?

we get claims at work against our tipper lorries having unclean wheels and stones flicking up..... most claims are unsubstantiated and claimed weeks after the event......drivers are never flagged down , so no chance of proving or disproving.... basically if proof is not substantiated tell them to fk off.... stone ships are just accept uk roads are in poor state of repair and claim off the local authority... if said car is Nissan or Toyota from late 90s id be fuming

I could be a very complete prick for the cars they get to drive, the places they get to go and the money they earn! biggrin

We get people into the office all the time claiming damage to cars from road debris. They all get told pretty much the same thing, no fault on the other driver and it's a normal hazard of driving on uk roads.

I also would never provide VRM's or ownership details to anyone either.

Good idea. Did so this morning. Very similar responses by the wider PH group.
Cheers!

Really? I can't believe this could actually happen!

It would make me reconsider renewing my insurance with Mannings if they would actually entertain a claim like this.

At the risk of being flamed does anyone know if these errant stone claimants fit a certain profile?

This sounds dubious to say the least. What is the evidence? There would be issues of causation and foreseeability in law.

I am a barrister and would be happy to help you if needed.

Best,

Stuart
