x type 3.0 v6 Sport
Discussion
I am currently looking for a work horse and viewed a x type Jaguar today.
The car is on 102k, full Jaguar service history up to 90k (this was back in 2010) No history from here.
The guy wants £1,200.00 the body work is in poor shape, but I like the car and would pay £1,200.
My only problem is, he's only onwed for 2 months and the chap before him only owned for 2months before that the guy owned it for 4 year and was a company car before then.
Would alarm bells ring or could it be the fact its a juciy car and people sell on due to this?
Everything checked out fine with the car, drove great.

Beware....
My 68k mile, fully serviced X-Type 3.0 V6 destroyed itself without any warning.
Bottom end of the engine decided it wanted a divorce from the rest of the engine all over the A46 outside Warwick.
No warning. Nothing. Just a horrible noise from the engine followed by a deathly silence......
Wasn't worth having a new engine fitted.
Many of the early 2000/2001 cars suffered from this due to the oil pump being in the wrong place - it was, I believe, moved on later cars.
If you get a good one then you should have some fun. Mine was good. Then it broke. Miss that car a lot.

I have had a look around and this car is very close, so Im willing to pay a bit extra to save travelling across the country.
Every car I look into seem to have horror stories which is very off putting. But everyone seems to miss their Jags.
My new job has a fuel card with it, where the company pays for fuel and I get taxed on it. Would it seem like a p£$S take to turn up in a 3.0 ltr Jag?

It probably does take the piss but, honestly, who gives a toss?
I loved my Jag.
It was fast, handled well, sounded epic (the original owner specced a £2k sports exhaust system!!!!!), was wonderfully comfortable & looked pretty good (even better when I swapped the alloys).
Yes, the 3.0's have an affinity for petrol stations, however this is well known so it isn't a reason to avoid them. If you can afford to run one do it.
Would I have another one?
Hell yeah - just as soon as I recover from brain surgery & I get back to work to fund it!!!
Loved my Jag. Miss my Jag a hell of a lot.

If I remember correctly, there is something expensive that goes wrong with the Diff on these cars... Checked it out?
You are talking about the transfer box, and if the problem has not reared itself by now then it won't as it is not a wear-and-tear issue but a problem with assembly of the box and the pre-load on the bearings not being set properly from the factory. It was an issue with early models.Having said that, if the transfer box starts leaking oil it needs to be fixed pronto tonto as there is only 3/4 of a litre in there. The oil seals are an easy and cheap fix though.
Biggest thing to look out for is rusty sills due to owner not realising they need to wash behind the plastic sill extensions.

Have the X-types really lost that much money?
I looked at a new one about ten years back but was scared off by the depreciation, to go from £35k to shed in 10yrs can't be right?
Yes, they have plummeted in value which is the only reason I didn't have the engine replaced in mine. Simply wasn't worth spending £1500 on an engine for a car which would then be worth £1600!!!!.I looked at a new one about ten years back but was scared off by the depreciation, to go from £35k to shed in 10yrs can't be right?
Decent X-Types can be had for around £1400/1500.
I will be back in one very soon.

My general rule of thumb is, if a car is scruffy on the outside, it has almost certainly been poorly looked after mechanically too. Put that along with the ownership history and I'd be avoiding this one.The guy wants £1,200.00 the body work is in poor shape, but I like the car and would pay £1,200.

Good call, text the chap last night to let him know. The search continues, been looking at celica's to, I know they complete different for the jag but seem a good buy.

I looked at a 2007 sovereign one a few months back which was fully species out with say nav, higher quality quilted leather, bbs azure wheels, only 65k from newI looked at a new one about ten years back but was scared off by the depreciation, to go from £35k to shed in 10yrs can't be right?
Was £4k, new it would have been £30k plus
I think it's the Mondeo connection has a bit to do with it. Although I couldn't care as it means serviceable items are Ford prices.
Also the 2003 - 2009 XJ can be had for as little as £3-4k now so that keeps the early cars cheap.

Most cars do - especially thirsty petrol ones. Have a look on Autotrader at S-Class Mercedes under £5k...I had an X-type for about 3 years. It liked petrol stations, but otherwise was pretty reliable. There are some common faults - most of which will have been sorted if it's got to 100k. I got rid of mine at 98k, and in the 40k miles I had it, I had to replace a rear caliper, water pump and a sensor on the exhaust (should have got both done as they are a pain in the arse to get at). It's also worth getting the tracking checked regularly as if it's out then they eat tyres for fun.
A very underrated car IMHO - shame Jaguar have never replaced it.
