I've been looking for sometime at purchasing a supercar. I was originally looking at a McLaren 12C or something else in that bracket. I've since changed my mind because it's personally too flashy for me. Now I'm looking at maybe an R8 or a 911, but I find it impossible to choose. It's hard to think that I'll just hand over all that money (paying in cash) and can't go back to change my mind. So, how did you guys end up picking the car you did? Because ever time I compare two cars I find that they both have qualities that I want and don't want and basically equalize themselves out.

Also, is the R8 or 911, in your opinion, more practical for every day use?

When you are shelling out this much money, buy the car that fulfills your dreams, that's all that matters, for me that was a lambo... Then model choice came down to what fit in the garage.

You are where I was 2 years ago. I went for an R8 as it was a sensible supercar that didn't come across as being too flash. After a few months however I got bored and hankered for something with more flair.

Roll on 9 months I sold the R8 and bought a Lambo and I haven't looked back since.

Totally agree. It's the only way and a personal decision. Drove an R8 for 4 hours and didn't want to drive it again, but that's me, and I know others love them. All down to personal preference.

R8 to me feels far more flash than a 12c in a subdued colour at least.

As for the buying process, you have to realise that mainly they are all exceptional cars you just need to find the one with the same priorities as yourself.

Well, first I won the lottery wink

But seriously, I don't own a supercar, I'm not likely to ever own one, but surely when it comes down to a purchase like that, provided one has the money (which obviously you do) it's got to be all about what makes you feel good. Right?

Have run a couple of 911's as daily runners and surprisingly practical. Comfortable, easy to see all around the car when driving and parking. Have test driven a couple of R8's and I would have problems using for a daily car, although not quite as practical as a 911 I would say.

Good luck.

The 911 and R8 are sportscars, not supercars. They lack prestige, drama and excitement.

If you are going to spend a chunk of change on a supercar, then you gotta do it properly. That means Lambo, Ferrari or Bugatti. Maybe McLaren on a good day, but they are generally dull or ugly.

What about one of these, you won't find one coming from the other direction when your driving, beautifully made, sounds glorious with the big V8 , and drive fantastic,

Agree with you about the porsche, but a v10 r8 to me definitely feels like a supercar. Low wide loud fast beautiful.

All IMO of course

I have a 911 and a 12C. Both are fantastic but if you love driving and love cars, the 12C has it. It's not flash but it is a few levels above a 911 (and I'm definitely a 911 fan). I agree with previous poster - you'll get bored and end up buying something a little more exotic so may as well go for the 12C now and save yourself the cost and hassle of changing after 9 months

The 12C is an absolutely incredible car. A test drive doesn't begin to reveal its talents. I've had numerous Ferraris so I can make a decent comparison - a 12C is a very smart choice for an 'only' supercar, especially in Spider form.

^ this really....

A non GT 911 has to be more practical than a R8 if only because you have something masquerading as rear seats and the R8 is a pretty wide car.

If you don't need the seats though, the R8 V10 is hard to fault IMO for a car at it's price, lovely engine, really fast and comfortable if not as focused as a GT 911 and it draws a lot less attention than a 12c (a good thing in my book).

Test drive and see which one you like... having said that, even a test drive doesnt really give you the big picture just a feeling...

I have owned numerous 911s and R8 V10 and now a 12C and really the R8 and 911 are great but just not at the same level. It really depends what your priorties are. A R8 is not that practical whilst a 911 is better in that regards... Performance wise a 12C is more than you ever need and unlikey to ever feel that is not fast enough.. TBH a 12C is really an understated performance car compared to say a Ferrari or Lambo..

It really depends on what you want.. I havnet regretted the 12c purcahse at all and in fact it is easily the best car I have ever owned..

imv the 12c isn't flashy and for the self conscious would be preferable over the R8 which is identifiable by most non-car people due to the tv adverts etc

I started with a budget, and looked at the cars available to me.
Shortlisted these by listening to the experience of others, some google research and personal preference on looks. It had to be a convertible.

It is all down to personal preference however i was determined to get a Gallardo. I drove an R8, Gallardo and F430.
The Ferrari, for me, delivered everything i had hoped for, and a little more.
3.5 years later, with an additional 18k miles on the clock, i have absolutely no regrets. Horses for courses biggrin

Can't afraid I don't agree with this and with first hand experience, dark grey R8 and black 12c. The 12c unfortunately draws far more stares, albeit partially due to the car being far louder.
