I currently have my side screens held in place with small bolts with nuts. About 20 per side. I would like to replace the bolts/nuts with some kind of quick release fastener. Does any one have any ideas for small quick fasteners that look good on the outside. My previous Ultima had about six screws on each side with rivnuts which worked out not bad; however, I still needed to carry a screwdriver and it took some time. I do think it is important to have ~20 fasteners on each side to hold the window in during top speed runs due to the cabin vacuum created.

I can tell you it is very pleasant and I do enjoy driving the Ultima with the side screens removed. I take them off, slip them into a cotton sleeve and store them behind the drivers seat with no problem. If caught with bad weather or to secure the car when traveling they can be put in relatively easy.

I'll search and if I find something I will post back.

Thanks.

You can get Dzus type quick release, quarter turn fasteners that look like a Mushroom head M6 allen screw from the outside - might be worth a look? Like this but with an allen head

Or the more classic type - may provide a security issue though?

I'm also planning on having my side screens removable. I have to have access to the fuel cell to service the fuel pump and fuel filter. I'm going to rivet on either MS21075L08 or MS21075L06 nutplates to (4) aluminum strips and bond them around the outside edge of the screen. The nutplate strips would not be seen from the outside as they would be nested on the fiberglass flange. I would think you could use your existing screw hole pattern, toss the nuts and use nutplate strips?
have fun

Captive nuts are a way forwards but the OP, and I expect others, want a quick release system rather than having to remove screws one at a time.
A better route would be something like the Camloc 5F series quarter turn fixings which look to be about the same size.

If you also use these the fixing remains captive in the window so you don't loose them.

How about a hinge in the Perspex!

I have the top of my side windows blanked off with stick backed plastic (all Blue Peter). How about riveting the top part of your side window and adding a hinge so that the bootom part could hinge out.

Ok, I've had some wine but it could work. Might even be able to pay toll charges without opening the door!!!!

I will be working the project this weekend, so I'll shoot out some pictures soon.
As for the Dzus style fasteners, seem like a good idea. How will you control the torque of the fastener against the gel coat? I know you can control the pressure with the spring height but it will still be smashed against the paint. Plus you will have a big Dzus fastener to look at.
I'm thinking of 6-32 black button head screws with nylon washers. The screws will go on the inside lip of the opening. The nutplate are self locking, so you don't have to crank down on the screws for them to hold. Anyway that is the plan, we will see if I can perform?

cheers

A quick Google finds a Nylon washer for 6-32 thread has a diameter of 9.5mm.
The 5f camloc has a head and washer diameter of 7.6mm.

Well... Plan A didn't pan out as installing nutplates would require pulling the screen toward you. That is hard to do when you don't have access to the back of the screen. So, plan B Dzus panel Fasteners (Per Mr, Steve D. thanks). Picture shows SS clips located with Rhino Coating removed.

This picture shows the Dzus receptacles installed

Screen mock-up. I cut the Ultima screen to the opening then fabricated painted aluminum sheet as the frame. The aluminum frame is bonded to the screen with polyurethane. The SS clips are installed with 3M 5200 Polyurethane and riveted in place.

Here's the completed install. I finished off the edges of the screen with self adhesive rubber trim. Lots of work, but I needed access to the tank.

Oh.... great victory in retaining the cup, but don't grip it to tight, as it coming back!!

cheers
