Evening everyone. Can any one recommend a weed killer to use on my artificial grass. My garden was a weed pit so I had the artificial grass fitted. The transformation is amazing but one thing iv noticed over the last few months is lumps appear under the grass. Has anyone else had this problem with fake grass and as the title suggest I'm looking for a weed killer that doesn't destroy the artificial stuff or discolour it in any way. Here's a pic too

Birds drop seed or seeds blow in the wind. Land in artificial grass and grow.

OP I'd have thought a general spray weedkiller would be fine.

A few questions:

If they are under the 'grass' how do you know they are weeds?
Didn't the fitters kill the plants before laying it?
Is there no membrane underneath to stop growth?
Are the lumps moles?
How the heck are you going to spray weed killer on something you can't see or get to, pull it back like a rug, spray a bit and pat it back down?!

have you checked if your budgie/cat/kids/hamster (delete as appropriate) are where they should be?

They are weeds not moles. All the ground work was done prior to having the grass fitted but weeds grow back fast in my garden so I have to apply weed killer to keep the weeds at bay but like I said I don't know what to weed killer to use so it doesn't bleach or melt the artificial stuff. The artificial grass has small holes which the odd weed pops out from so I just need to keep in top off them. I'd rather pull a weed out every once in a while than cut it every couple of weeks

Just use Round Up, it will kill anything with a green leaf.

RoundUp or any other glyphosate based weedkiller (which is pretty much all of what's on the shelves these days)

Surely you just roll it up, weedkiller / dig out the weeds and then roll it back again? wink

I spoke to my friend about this (He laid mine) as we have moss growing on top in a few places as there's trees shading that part. He pointed me towards Algon which I got off ebay, applied with a sprayer and left for a few days. Moss / any other unwelcome shrubs are now dead / dying and it will need a brush over in a couple of days.
He's lending me his Stihl power brush to speed things up. It will then have a few bags of the correct sand spread over it and should be like new again. That's the first maintenance / care it's needed in about 4 years other than a leaf blower.

Under that artificial grass should be a layer of weed membrane followed by a compacted 75mm layer of type 1 followed by a 25mm layer of compacted sharp sand. There is no way weeds would grow through that lot.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's something to do with stopping the pile flattening too much but I could be wrong!! It's my mates company and his recommendation so I'm not going to question it!

I just wondered, it seems a strange thing to do as it can cause something for plants to grow into. My knowledge of artificial grass is zero though!

Is it safe to use lawn sand on artificial grass this way you are doing 2 jobs in 1, killing weeds blown on and sanding as supposed to as general maintenance

^^^ This.

Go down to your local DIY store. They will have a special tool for it. Ask for a '5lb lump hammer'.

If the lumps return after first application, try nailing frozen sausages into them, next time.
