I need some help , my Son needs something to watch movies on that is portable, battery operated and cannot have a camera. I have looked at all sorts of tablets, pads laptops and ultrabook type gadgets but they all have a camera. Only needs a 10-11" screen (no smaller than 10" but can be bigger) and be reasonably light. I'd really like a tablet but happy to settle for anything that can play MP4/X264/AVI files.

The big issue here is that everything I have looked at seems to have a camera. Maybe I havent looked at far enough down into the cheapy cheapy ones ?

I need to buy this tomorrow for delivery monday!

Any suggestions appreciated. Price is not an issue.

Thinkpad X230. Refurbished on Ebay - £400 though.

There must be a cheap tablet without a camera!

Not much of a market for them, even the low end corp stuff have em now, any think in a secure area etc would probably need to be a special order.

Any particular reason? You could always disable it in drivers on a laptop and only give him a normal user account?

Without going into detail he has a disability meaning he is in a special unit and no cameras are allowed even if disabled.

Im going to ask if its ok if i drill out the camera on a tablet but i think it will still be no.

I think that maybe the earlier poster was on the right track, an old refurbed laptop on ebay may be the best answer

How about that? I've no experience of the Nook so maybe someone else can chime in.

The camera will just be a plug in module that could be removed by a techie with a screwdriver.

I would concur that a refurb might be the best option, try CEX or similar?

Or remove the driver for the camera on the laptop.

Not quite 10" ... but the iPad 1 does not have a camera.

Plenty refurbs on ebay, eg

So as a matter of interest, are all visitors and staff prohibited from taking their phones into the unit?

Dont know yet its all new to me, I suspect its ok for visitors but not for residents which does make sense.

Great suggestions from people about the Nook, I think that is the perfect answer.

For a laptop, in a number of laptops it'll be fairly easy to screw open the screen and remove the camera module.
I remember a couple of years ago, they were optional on some Dell's, might try your luck there?
